No Comment: a Big Mistake
They're the most underrated form of content on Steemit, and yet they are what made the first load of bots into Steemmillionaires. I'm talking of course about comments. Time and time again do I stumble across great posts with interesting and enticing content, yet the comment section is dead as a doornail. Where I'd like to see discussion and debating, I instead see a heapful of "Great posts" and "Well done!". And that's a shame!
Comments Increase the Value of the Content above them
The Comment section allows YOU to get a one on one talk about the topic with whoever wrote about it. You can pick the mind of a famous artist, developer or content creator to your leisure, or you can just ask Joe Regular about his camping trip in the Rockies. It's your party! But you're not the only one benefiting from them. The content creator can get valuable insight, commentaries and constructive criticism on their posting through the comment section. I know more than a few of us are here for the money. Come for the money, stay for the community - that's a motto that fits a lot of the userbase. And that's cool! Greed is good during the initial stages of Steemit. Yet, many are overlooking a simple fact - you don't need to have a lot of knowledge or money to make it on Steemit. If you just ask the correct questions and join in on the discussion at hand, you'll get lots of upvotes and payouts just for chiming in! No need to be a painter, scientist, investor or creative mind, when you can get paid for asking a question!Comments are Fun
You'll start noticing the same people replying to you, talking to you and hanging around topics you enjoy! You might make new friends, follow each others feeds and talk for years to come. Comments are the closest thing we have to an open community platform on the Steemit main page, and while they may not move as quickly as the chat or a PM system might, they still allow for the creation of valuable bonds. So go out there and frollic in the comment sections!

And in general: where can we lookup the details of the voting reward system and if it changes is there a tag or place to look up these basics and their updates?
I'd like to go in depth on this kind of thing later, but as a rule of thumb, quality > quantity. If it's too big to put in a comment easily, make a blog new post tagged as a reply to the one you want to comment on. Rewards of the blog and any comments are seperate, to my understanding. I've seen 3 dollar posts have 1000 dollar comments.

Yup. They're very rewarding, they reward the post above them by adding depth, and they allow you to get your feet wet without counting toward your daily blog posts.
Can't go wrong with comments!

While reading this I kept thinking of my experiences at work with asking people to review documents. The ten or fifteen times of "Looks good" "Nice job" or similar one liners, it became obvious they weren't reading the documents or even looking at them. Unfortunately that manifested itself as things began to role into an implementation phase.
The same can be said for Steemit. Most great things posted have no comments or comments that have no critical feedback, advise or critiques.
It takes a minute to write something insightful or helpful, but even that seems like a hurdle for some of the one liner folk. Live and let live, I guess.
My personal method would be to leave a comment to the tune of 'for bookmarking purposes, will read later' if I didn't have time to analyze a post, rather than a one liner like you mentioned above.
Intriguing post; you make some good points. My understanding was that Steem was built to become a community surrounding interesting content and a new crypto currency, and comments are part and parcel to that vision. Well done.
Absolutely. They're the salt to the main course. Small and hard to notice at a glance, but vital to the enjoyment and taste of the dish!

but look no one up votes the comments any more, no up vote= no money . i think once a notification system is put in place things will change.
People upvote comments. They just need to be actual comments, not just random exclamations of 'great post, well done'. I'll put out a piece on how to be a better commentor, stay tuned :)
More than half of my (worthless) upvotes are spent on comments.
Not all post you can leave comments.
One may end up a disagreement . Result in down voting. I am vary of that.

That's part of the system. You'll do well to be yourself, rather than forcing yourself to be fake and nice. If you leave somebody feedback, even negative one, it's their loss if they abuse that gift.
