Steemit Popularity and Traffic
Alexa Internet traffic ranking has been a great gauge for Steemit platform, but the info on Alexa isn't really telling the true story anymore.
Alexa is a internet ranking tool that gives the internet ranking by country and world. Google for instance has the most internet traffic and is #1. At the time of this blog, Alexa ranks Steemit as #942 most traffic in the world.
First, it is important to understand that STEEM is the platform and Steemit is one of several apps that operate on the STEEM platform.
As Steemit is growing, the blogs that are generated remain available for search engines such as Google & Bing. These blogs then find themselves popping up more often as people enter search words, because they are literally more blogs available on the internet every day from Steemit.
This in turn creates more traffic as random people stumble on Steemit.
See the graph below from Alexa. The "Unique" visits are somewhat by chance. This is a good thing that gives Steemit more visibility.
What is being skewed is the actual Alexa rank. I believe that as more Steemit blogs exist, then the probability that internet traffic to Steemit increases.
In addition, Alexa shows that the majority of the internet traffic comes from the United States.
Well, wait a minute Alexa... Clearly that is not the case. Or is it? My followers are primarily non-US residents. Here is why I think that Alexa is off. Steemit blogs are often in English. Why? it just happens to be the language where the majority of payouts and visibility exist. This in turn creates search engine hits that are primarily from the United States. Many of visitors are here by chance. What Alexa is not showing is the true usage of Steemit which is much more diverse than is shown on the Alexa website.
What we really need to have a census performed. I'm no programmer, so I cannot perform a census. I was able to find one that was performed about 10 months ago, however, I think Steemit has changed dramatically since then creating a more diverse community of people around the world.
In addition, Steemit is one of several apps. This growing number of special use apps and their popularity takes away Alexa traffic from Steemit. This is not a bad thing as STEEM is the platform that houses Steemit and the other apps.
Here are examples of other great STEEM apps:
- esteem
- chianbb
- dsound
- dtube
- dmania
- busy
- steepshot
- utopian
- zappl
In conclusion:
Steemit has visibility that can't be undone. Blogs will continue to fill the space and grow to flood search engines. Eventually searches will always have a number of results that include blogs from Steemit. Diversity in the Steemit space is also growing which further solidifies Steemit existence and growth. The growing number of STEEM apps may be watering down the Alexa ranking for Steemit, but only strengthen the STEEM platform.

Thank you for explaining this like that. I'd heard previously that Steemit is just a STEEM app, but it comes through much more clearly when you put it side by side with other STEEM apps. I really always thought of the others as Steemit apps LOL.
That is how I heard @ned explain it on a video last month. I was even confused about it. I’m glad you liked my blog.
I don't take much notice of the Alexa rankings. The number of transactions is more interesting to me. Steem has more than double Ethereum and more than 10x Bitcoin transactions today. The record so far is over 2 million transactions in a day. https://blocktivity.info/
The power of STEEM platform is quite impressive. We have a much larger community than Steemit alone and huge capability. Thanks @sharpshot for sharing that link.
I think you have a good point here man.
Like the page view count, it's pretty hard to track traffic/views watching the content from Steemit/busy/eSteem/dtube, as they all have different Web front ends.
So even if Steemit.com is looking that way, steemit.kr, or hits from busy.org aren't being added together. This could mean that we have more traffic/views than we think actually.
Cheers!
I thought it might be possible to accomplish a real rank, but would take some work. There is definitely more usage than what is on Steemit alone. As the popularity of the different apps grow, there will be a significant demand for STEEM. That would make right now a great buy.
I never knew that there are actually tools to observe the activities in the steemit platform and I'm wondering such heavy traffic could lead the Google to have something in their head like starting to get some fees for their service...I'm just saying. Thanks for the sharing.
Get prepared to have your mind blown. http://steemtools.com/
Haha Thanks for the link i try to find out more about it. That is a quick reply.
Ye ALex ranking is not very accurate. However, in just a year, Steem web links are more visible on social media and in google. More and more friend son facebook and whatsapp are sharing links from Steemit. We need a wiki on steem
I’ve definitely noticed a change in the number of times I find a Steemit blog using a search engine. It has changed quite a bit in only a few months. I think a bunch had to do with the additional apps like dtube.
There are classes. I’ve never signed up for them. Also as you probably know there is a welcome page that has quick start links.

The Alexa raking gives a good indication of the increase in popularity and this is a healthy sign for the platform.
I can’t wait for Steemit to be in the top 10.
@socky I agree with you completely that steemit has an explosive growth difficult to hide, so I'll give you resteem this post that really has been fantastic. Congratulations
