Steemit etiquette - is reposting your own original content verboten?
I'm hardly a big player here - I don't find the time to write that often, and I have a company to run and all that, but I do try to throw a few words together when I get a chance. I have been experimenting with some cross-posting, and I'd love your opinion.
The content breakdown of what I post where (my primary website, Twitter, Facebook, Steemit, Github, etc) varies pretty wildly. I use Twitter for tech ranting discussions/diatribes (usually not cryptocurrency related though), Facebook for politics diatribes and cat videos, my own website for tutorials and businessy-stuff, and Steemit for some mix of all of those things plus some art and recipes.
As I try to figure out what Steemit will be for me personally, this usually shakes out in one of two ways:
Reposting My Older Content to Steemit
I have occasionally *re-posted* something that I published a long time ago somewhere else (one of my websites, my GitHub, etc.) It's still my content, and my intention is to introduce my Steemit followers to some of my best (if a little older) work. I've been writing on the internet for over 20 years, after all - and it's unreasonable to expect folks who follow me here to track down all of my websites if they want to read more from me, so it seems like an ethically sound thing to do. I always disclose if it's been published elsewhere, so it's not like I'm tricking anyone. I have only ever pulled over content that I thought had real value and was some of my best work.
Reposting Steemit Content to My Own Sites
Some content I post here doesn't make sense to post on my primary blog. It's known for being a tech/business blog, so my (albeit awesome) curried egg recipes would seem a little weird there. But occasionally, I end up writing something here that I'd like to add to my blog. My policy has generally been that I post it here, then wait a week and post it to my blog with a link back to my original Steemit piece, that way nothing is competing with the other.
I personally feel like it's okay to do either/both of these things, since it's my content and I always disclose if it's been published elsewhere, but I'm curious what the Steemit community thinks. Is it gauche, or is it okay, as long as the content is your own and re-posted in good faith?

way i see it, it is your content, you created it, so you can post and repost wherever you like. just because you put it somewhere else does not mean it is no longer original content. i have a mix of old content and new content some is on onther platforms some is exclusive to steemit. that being said if i wanted to post my steemit exclusives on other platforms i most certainly would.
imagine that we HAD to create only original content for each platforms we were part of? we would never be able to take a break because of how much we would need to be creating.
Fair points, all. (And yeah - if I had to create original content everywhere, I'd be writing even less than I already do.)
I see all internet/social media outlets as avenues for self expression, this is who we are. We cant be expected to recreate ourselves on each outlet or it defeats the purpose... that is to be our congruent and autonomous selves.

I have the same conundrum. I don't know when to post something to my blog, and when here. I try not to have any cross-polination - for no good reason at all whatsoever.
Typically it breaks down by topic. Everything about cryptocurrency I post here. I've written a few Apple posts here, too. But hard-core technical stuff, I post to my blog. I guess I kinda feel like that's my "Here, I'm an Internet Person, if this helps me get a job then that is very good" site.
Whereas here I post stuff that's weirder or more philosophic or more rambling. Or "might be boring to people who know my blog," maybe?
I'm still not sure.
That's sort of been my approach as well. Folks that follow me on twitter or read my blog know they'll usually be getting a specific technical step-by-step tutorial, or perhaps some higher level business stuff, but I try not to ramble on my blog. Folks get emailed when I post something new there (if they signed up for that) and I try really hard not to invade their inbox for a (delicious, delicious) curried egg recipe. Notifications here are more passive so I feel a little more at ease waxing rhapsodic here.
I've been reposting some of my own content that I wrote a few years ago on my blog. Sometimes I'll point out that it was previously published elsewhere, other times I won't.
Either way, it doesn't matter. It's my content and I'll republish it as many times as I want. That's the advantage of creating your own content.
I'll guarantee that anybody who has read what I've written on here has never visited my blog. So I am covering all my bases. You can read my stuff here or over on my other sites. You don't need to do both.

I don't know - I've seen some people have Very Strong Opinions about what content should be here and what shouldn't. That's usually in the context of plagiarism (and understandably so), but I wasn't sure how folks felt about it since I don't see that many discussions about re-sharing one's own content, mostly just about people stealing theirs. As a relative newcomer, I'd prefer to not piss off an entire community because of a misunderstanding or not really grokking the rules.
Meh , most posts on steemit are pictures of some shoes or spaghetti, I wouldn't worry about actual content that you put 'proof-of-brains' into.
lol shoes or spaghetti... It always seems to be that most Steemit content is 1) stupid jokes 2) porn or 3) pontification about Steemit. I guess this post counts as the third :D

Actually I never see porn on here until yesterday I am telling this shy Japanese girl all about how she should totally sign up on steemit, and I am showing her the site on my computer - so I search steemit for #Japanese and... tons of tons of bodily fluids- only slightly awkward..
Ugh - that sucks. :( I feel like I haven't seen as much of it lately as I did a few months ago, but I've also been really busy and haven't been hanging out here that much. I feel like the "new" timeline was pretty raunchy for a bit. But, like, only jpegs - as if it's 1998 again or something lol
