Onam is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in Kerala. It is also the harvest festival. This festival is also a vibrant display of joy and excitement. Onam is mainly celebrated as part of welcoming Emperor Mahabali.

The people of Kerala follow the Malayalam calendar and this is known as Kollavarsama. Onam is celebrated in the first month of the Malayalam calendar, Singham. That is, according to the Gregorian calendar, Onam is celebrated in the months of August - September respectively.

The first day is called Atham and the tenth day is Thiruvan. These two days are very important for Onam compared to other days. Onam was declared as the national festival of Kerala in 1961 after seeing the people of Kerala present their culture and tradition for these ten days.
