This is What is Such Fucking Bullshit About Steemit...
Yeah yeah yeah, I know you have all heard it before right, whales have too much power, go whine some more right. I agree it does get old people whining about that.
That said here is what is such fucking bullshit about Steemit
So this morning I made a post titled If Steemit No Longer Allowed Bots, Would the Price of Steem and SBD Tank?. The post was about a topic that does well on Steemit, Steemit itself. It was pretty well written and pretty thought provoking if I don't mind saying so myself.
The post was pretty well received by the community as well.
It wound up getting to date 140 upvotes and 23 comments.
To me that means it struck a chord with people on here. It had a lot of people who thought it was worthy of an upvote, but not only that, in some ways I think comments can be even more difficult to get than upvotes and I got 23 comments which again means people found the subject matter interesting and cared enough to take a moment to share their thoughts.
Now before I get into the quasi ranting part of the post let me first say I'm incredibly flattered by the upvotes as well as the comments. I appreciate your guys time and attention and I'm incredibly grateful for that.
Here's the part that drives me crazy though, and it's not even just about the money. This post got 140 upvote and 23 comments but it didn't make it onto the Trending or Hot pages. This post also made $7.26.
When I go to look at the "Hot" tab however I see posts that didn't get even a fraction of the upvotes or comments as my post which are making $40, others $80, some as high as a couple hundred Dollars.
Steemit Will Never Grow if this Remains How it is
So in the photos above the top post is mine which had a lot of upvotes and comments. The other posts made a lot of money and made it onto hot and trending but didn't get much engagement in the way of comments and upvotes.
Now with most platforms like Youtube and most other social media platforms the algorithms are written to take stuff which is well liked by large numbers of people and show it to more people. Ultimately at the end of the day the longer they keep you on the site the more money they make. And by showing you stuff which gets people engaged they are likely to keep you on the site for longer.
In the case of Steemit however the stuff that gets pushed to the masses isn't stuff that people enjoy, it isn't content that engages people and gets them involved. What gets pushed to the masses is content which is paid to be pushed out and/or content that is liked by a select few whales. That is not the recipe for a thriving platform.
I'm sure we've all heard arguments debating the needs of the many vs the needs of the few. In the case of Steemit it's not about rallying the community or getting the community engaged, it's about what benefits a handful of really powerful people on here.
That's my little rant for the day.
By the way, I don't mean to be overly negative, I'm simply pointing out some problems with Steemit. That said I will say the more shit talking I do or critiquing the platform I do the better my posts do lol.
@rulesforrebels Hang in there..... I won't say you are completely off the mark because alot of what you post rings true, but I also say that you need to give Steemit a little more time. Either your audience will continue to build, which it is, or you will find a Steemit "fairy god-mother" aka Whale that will help support your posts.
TIME is the key.
Patience is the door.
And FREEDOM is on the other side.
Hey @streetstyle appreciate the comment and the support. I see you show me some love with the upvotes. @brianphobos has also been a great help and very welcomming, made a lot of good friends on here but yeah you definitely need that whale or fairy godmother.
I'm not going anywhere, I enjoy the platform and have made some great friends here so gonna stick around but definitely do have some frustrations at times. Oddly enough these types of posts tend to get more eyes on them oddly enough.
I definitely know you can break out if you stick around and keep plugging away I've seen a number of new users come out of nowhere just being very active and creating good content and definitely do make a mark so definiately possible.
Thanks again
Dear @rulesforrebels, your post is absolutely right, look at it: https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/steemit.com
Forthe first time popularity of Steemit is going down, i think you understand the reason why....
this platform is highly being gamed by a select few who control the majority of power....its an insiders club and you aren't getting in unless you buy your way in or know someone. Unfortunately nothing about this system is going to change and most non whales can look forward to collecting their measly pittance for the week.
That being said, I have made infinitely more money being a minnow in the relatively new platform: https://sola.ai/spin_70271
I've made more in a week there than 9 months on steemit. so there is hope, just on different platforms.
That's probably the sad truth about Steemit right there.
The things you have mentioned above are very similar to the real life.
Looks like Steemit is a reflection of the real life.
Sola sounds interesting. Do they pay you in crypto? How's it work? When you say you have made more, is this value still sitting there in your account on the web site or have you withdrawn it into some other account?
Yeah that's a good point. I'm not going anywhere but I sometimes feel like why am I wasting my time and further enriching a select few people who don't give a fuck about me. On top of that I earn peanuts for my time on here. I'm already a content creator so the two additional seconds it takes me to reupload a Youtube video here is worthwhile for me even if it makes a quarter but that type of setup encourages people to use this site as a content dump like a vidme as opposed to being an acive and valuable member of the community
I have thought a lot about how to correct things like you are talking about and it is a tough situation because people will create more upvote bots and bots to comment to push themselves onto a trending page if that is how it worked.
The algorithm would have to be super complicated like factoring in reputation weight for a vote or a comment and also factoring in if that account has a good voting distribution or if they just self vote all the time. If a combination of these factors were considered then I think there could be a better payout. Also I'm not opposed to having non intrusive ads at the side of the blog and then doing a revenue split or even if they took that revenue and bot STEEM and did Steem Power air drops to people who have gotten over a certain reputation and are engaging a certain amount with comments, posts, upvotes....etc.
Good work talking shit about Steemit! lol
Yeah that's what really drives me crazy about Steemit. I made 2 back to back posts that did over 140 upvotes and 120 upvotes and neither made over $10.
Obviously I'm somewhat biased, if I had a whale fairy godmother who gave me $30 or $50 per post I'd probably think the current setup was pretty swell lol.
That said it just seems very skewed that I can engage over 100 people to upvote on top of the numerous commnets my posts got, people obviously enjoyed the content and the votes of those 100+ people are not even worth 1/10th of what a vote from a larger user would equate to.
I totally agree it would be nice if there was some slush fund to give some money to posts that get over 100 upvotes or 50 upvotes or whatever it may be. I suppose thats too simple though, people will just create or buy accounts setup bots and have 100 accounts upvoting them so the algorithm like you said would have to be more advanced and take into account how votes are spread around
Yeah it is a tough situation for sure of how to balance it properly. The thing is that makes it so much different as well is that it is an open source platform that people can program on top of. Where there are bots on Twitter and Instagram and all that it is more of a guessing game over there to not get your account deleted by gaming the system to hard.
Here there is no central authority that can just delete an account because it would therefor delete a person's wallet as well so it becomes a rough situation.
I feel ya about a whale fairy godmother. But I'm suprised you don't post your blogs with Busy.org. I have done pretty well just getting upvotes from Busy.pay for using their platform to post. You just have to make one of the tags Busy
I was using busy for a while. Oddly enough I used it mainly to browse and comment, I don' think I've ever actually posted on there. I always seem to forget sometimes just using an alternate steem platform can be lucrative with votes from the platform or audience like dtube and others. I"ll have to keep that in mind. Oftentimes I make my videos or post them on my way out the door to the office in a rush and I'm already logged into Steemit so its just easier to do it that way in a hurry but I'll definitely try posting from busy
Yeah try posting from busy and put busy as one of the tags. It has been a life saver for me honestly getting that upvote.
I've made 2 posts this past week talking about similar issues here on steemit - manily going after bots / paid upvotes and the late view counter (now removed) there definitely needs to be some changes made around here - the fact that you earned / had more interaction than other posts that made it to the trending/hot page seems fishy to say the least. All the best man. Thanks for your honesty.
I was surprised I ran to Aldi and came back to see this post had gotten 120 votes and wasn't hot, hadn't earned much money etc. Honestly its not even all about the money though that is frustrating, sure I'd love to earn more but really more than anything I like getting the recognition and making connections via upvotes and comments, but I sure do wish the money would more evenly match the type of interaction the posts are getting
It's posts like this that make me wish my vote was worth more. The rewards will come - weather the storm.
Steemit just needs to fix their internal algorithms to correctly select "better" content. I think all of this will come in due time. As for the bot's, im sure we will see bot reform also at some point.
Yeah it will be interesting to see what winds up being done with the algorithm as the current system from my limited understanding seems to be kind of baked into how the site works.
My one fear for Steemit or something I wish would happen sooner is I wish these problems would be resolved faster. Reason being Steemit a while back had been growing very fast and with Steem being in the top 50 coins it's bound to get some attention and bring on some new users, however when people come on here, have a poor experience, last 2 weeks and then leave saying fuck this shit, those people will probably never be back or won't come back until this is a VERY established site. I guess my point being we are hurting the impression for new users and potentially also turning people off from holding the coin ie great concept if it actually works I'd love to invest but I don't think it's going anywhere because its so slanted towards the few whales.
Yeah the current state is a mess and there seems to be little ground breaking updates of late. But I have a feeling @ned has a few ace's up his sleeve and we will see something amazing come out of all this. I have faith.
Una información muy valiosa, gracias por compartirla, @rulesforrebels.
