Why Steemit will never be Mainstream

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

So when I first started with Steemit I was very excited.

As time went on I realized that only the Whales will make money here.

Minnows post and post and post.

We receive pennies because nobody upvotes us.

So little by little minnows will lose interest in Steemit if they do not make money.

This will eventually trickle down to the Whales.

So as I see it this may be the demise of Steemit.

If I am incorrect only time will tell.

I know it's not a popular opinion, so good on you for posting (unless you are unaware of the hate for minnow whining here 😜 )
I do like Steemit, but it has a few issues, and this is certainly one of them.
The curve is too steep, one person should not be worth more than 1000 others, people don't like it in real life, and I don't think it will pan out here.
I dont think Steemit will be the next , I think it will be the next
A great start, that is eventually replaced by a company that listens to the majority of the users.
Only time will tell

I like the way you think. I am a minnow and I just upvoted your comment.

Whales are whales because they paid money to buy steam power.
how much money have you spent to buy steam power?

Just my point. Mainstream majority of people do not have extra money to toss around.

Steemit is a platform where you are GIVEN money and allowed to earn MORE money (I done it..read my blog)
and yet you complain?

what does it take to make you happy?

It could be better, and if they don't make it so, someone else will

Didnt you just contradict your own argument (2 posts up) there?
They are just saying it could be better... the gap will get larger and new people will go elsewhere...

I am a minnow :-(

I also see the struggle, but I do believe in the platforms potential. The point of this platform is not to make money, as you said it, its social media. Do you make any pennies at all from any other social media site?

I think we should encourage the community to be more giving, and also our posts should only get credit where its due, and sometimes that many not occur and it can be frustrating but I still think if we appeal to this crowd (as people here might not possess the same mentality as on other social media platforms). There is still hope. Dont give up

You say "I think we should encourage the community to be more giving" but you did not even upvote my post. So see everyone is so selfish. Not SOCIAL at all.

Sorry about that! I wrote that response whilst waiting for at a doctors appointment.

Upvoted now, seeing that its still the only thing youre interested in, its only been day 8 on the platform for me personally, and yet I believe it is something of great potential. I know that this may be a sore topic for all on Steemit, but also keep the sense of entitlement at bay.

exactly, I got this comment on one story..
"This is the funniest birth story I've ever heard..."
yet, no upvote.
I was not surprised.. it's pretty typical as everyone is saving their votes for the story they think will make them $$. Which is most likely posted by a whale

or they save upvotes to use on their own posts.

Well, if it's only about the $ that can send Steemit mainstream you're right. However, I would disagree that this is what will prevent Steemit from moving in that direction. Perhaps the money brings in new users, but it's the community that keeps those that like it here.

Even then Steemit has a lot of other areas that need to be worked on for it to move beyond the look and function of a basic early 2000's social media network with limited functionality. It needs to mature faster with more focus on a dedicated development team. We need customer service to some level. Improved search, some kind of chat functionality, and a simplification of the rewards system to make it easier to get involved.

At least that's how I see it. :)

Everyone talks about community, but I dont really see it.
I see everyone being nice, way nicer than youtube comments.. why is that? fear or a downvote.. because it effects $
I see plenty of scammers making money
I see plenty of thieves making money
I see people being 'friendly' by copying/pasting into all 'introduceyourself' posts, following to get followers, only to unfollow later.

I see plenty of great minnow posts making nothing

Fear and greed can only go so far. It will be the demise of this site and it's coin. Unless they make a change and level the playing field.

take my $0.01! (probably less after dilution)

Maybe you haven't found the right group of people to interact with while exploring other blog posts and even in the comment sections. Over time I found a nice crew of Steemit people I genuinely like to read and comment on because they share similar interests to me. In fact some of us hang out on Steemit.chat or Discord to further our chats and to support each other's posts too (won't deny that).

But for me, I've actually found an audience here that values what I'm writing about and it's not my standard friends and family... nor do I have to worry about finding an audience to come to a blog page that I've put up on some random URL, worrying about search page results and syndicating it on forums and such. Everything is right here for me :)

Yes, the idea of being paid for a post was intriguing and brought me in, but that's not what has kept me going. I'm sure you'll find it too through a little more exploration :)

great reply, thanks!

If it's not about money. We would all just stay on Facebook.

where some of the people are actually our friends and family?
Na, this is the real community...
But seriously, It's not polite to talk about money on a site that is different from other sites because.. well... um... oh, yeah, FUCKIN' MONEY!

I don't agree with that. I don't use Facebook because of how focused on advertising it's gotten, plus I'm not interested in seeing pictures of babies, weddings, or food and "fake news". Steemit has some amazing articles to read, and a lively community within my area of interest. Yes, the idea of getting paid for content writing was interesting and why I decided to check it out, but that's not what kept me going :)

bye bye...FaceBook is ready when you are.

Open your eyes or you may wake up and your 10,000 steem power could be worthless. greed will take it down

Google is sensoring steemit. I wont see any steemit posts in search results

This is simply not true.
Facebook apparently does, but not Google..

So how do you go about getting upvotes? This is all still new to me.

Interact with the community just like any other social media network. Write articles that have depth, make meaningful comments and upvote other content that genuinely interests you. I've been here for 1 month now, also a newbie to the platform, but it's worked well for me :) Much luck!

Is there a need to be judicious with your upvotes, with the understanding that if something is interesting or enjoyable for you, you should upvotes it?

Entirely your choice. If I like something I'll upvote it just like on any other social network. The difference is I can control the strength of the upvote on Steemit :)
