What ever happened to my word is my bond?

In a world where technology is supposed to be bridging gaps it seems that we have lost touch with how to communicate effectively.

Too many of us find we have had promises from friends, partners and employers that never really came through. The worst of these is a potential employer who schedules an appointment or call but never actually followed through. Yes, if you are a recruiter you fall in this category too. For a job seeker this is devastating, demotivating and dissuading.

What is not surprising is that these behaviours have led to many severed relationships. The general rule of thumb is this; treat people with respect and honesty – mean what you say and say what you mean. The world becomes a better place when we begin to change ourselves. The way we treat people is a reflection of our personal brand and who we are. It is the one thing that goes everywhere with us. Therefore, we must always seek to be the best version of ourselves, we do this by simply looking within and....

  1. Reschedule or Cancel - If you are unable to keep an appointment or will be late be polite enough to send a message.

  2. Don’t make promises you can’t keep - Be straight! If you know there are other potential candidates let the job seeker know. With job placements and hiring there is never a 100 percent guarantee, so don’t have the candidate walk away feeling that they have the job if you know there is a possibility that they are not a good fit.

  3. Follow through on your word
If you say you will send a follow up email to let the candidate know your decision, then do that. If you offered to review their resume or send a referral, then do that.

  4. Apologize when you make a mistake
If you forgot about the appointment, ran late or missed sending an email, take the time to apologize. We understand you are busy, some things are beyond our control, you’re human – people forget. An apology can quickly change a hostile feeling into one of forgiveness and acceptance.

People will remember you for the impression you left them with. When people are most vulnerable, they need to know that at the very least you are standing by your word.
