The first five places must win an important prize to incentivize the effort to excellence, however you should also reward with 1-2 steem to the people who participate so that they do not lose heart.
When I started to participate in this type of contests I never won anything, there are very good people who always remain in the first places, but I decided to improve and read about it, little by little I am achieving better places and I even won a contest.
I think that instead of demotivating you, it should be a reason to improve.
