Patrolling the Mojave Almost Makes You Wish For a Nuclear Winter...
Hello there Steemians! and 5/7 for you if you got that reference without having to google it! In the past week there has been a lot of talks about world war III and fear mongering is running rampant across the web, in the news, on the streets, everyone is talking about war, death and destruction.
All this talks reminded me of a pretty cool website i found a few weeks ago that lets you test out different nuclear warheads all across the world and gives you amazing statistics about what each bomb would do in the environment, its not a perfect number for obvious reason that would be pretty hard to estimate, but its a nice approximate.... so lets check out if this nuclear war or world war 3, whatever you want to call it would be really that bad for humanity!
This is only but a small fraction of what the website has to offer, they have amazing information regarding nuclear bombs and climate change, but for this post we are going to focus on the former.
You are greeted with this screen.
After greeting you guys with that title, the more knowledgeable of you guys (props if you got the reference again) will already know where I am going to head first!
With a nuclear bomb of the same capacity as Little Boy(The bomb that got dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima) we get a total of:
- 16,889 Fatalities
- 23,467 Injuries
That's slightly disappointing with all the talks going around the end of the world you would expect nuclear bombs to wipe out humanity in an instant! but sadly this are not the bombs that are out there ready to be launched and go boom boom boom in your head, because for good or bad, one of the best human traits is becoming efficient and that efficiency sadly has extended into efficient ways of killing and wiping out populations, so lets see the whole array of boom booms we have at our disposal shall we?
We have our very own arsenal of weapons of mass destruction! amazing isn't it? efficient killing 101.... why waste time testing the small ones? lets just go for the big boom boom and end the world already am I right? Lets see what changes if we go from Little Boy to the Tsar Bomba! (almost 3000% stronger than the Little Boy!)
Now we are getting results aren't we!? With this big fellow we got:
- 1,262,399 Fatalities
- 440,790 Injuries
Not to mention that the shock wave also reached the neighboring state of Arizona! Overall a very efficient killing machine if you ask me, just one boom and 1+ million people are gone in minutes if not seconds, really scary stuff.
But lets be real guys, Las Vegas is not a prime target for nuclear bombing (Unless you hate fun, then its probably on your top 10), so lets jump around a few real nuclear targets to see what would the results of a nuclear bombing would be on them!

They'd have to be extremely bored to go much bigger than the Tsar Bomba, but then again I did hear mention of a Russian underwater drone capable of 100 MT, guess we can expect some Radioactive Tsunami's should it come to it!
If anything, the MIRV warheads deployed or in development would blanket large metro areas/small countries to the point where several smaller bombs would cause more Megadeaths (Look that one up) than one big boss bomb.
Also, my hometown makes me wish for nuclear winter! But no-one would waste a Tsar Bomba on such a mediocre target :p
A radioactive tsunami would probably be the least of our problems if that thing accidentally detonated in the ocean lol. I'm familiar with the term megadeaths and at least you are sort of safe in your hometown, you may not die instantly by an explosion but you will die anyways via radiation or the destruction of the whole world ecosystem.
It would be a 'in-the-moment' sort of deal certainly, obviously the fallout would do much more damage in the longer-term than the wave itself (Fukushima Tuna x100) nevermind the repercussions on something like that going off as a mere accident.
Safe would be somewhat subjective, considering my home is within the maximum radius of the blast front, if anything I would try to weasel my way to my cousin's house outside of town before the buttons are pressed...
Though as you said, global environmental collapse will turn every refuge into a grave, the Permian-Triassic Extinction will look like a cozy catastrophe by comparison.
O.O That's a big bomb. I wonder how many of those are out there roaming the wild, ready to be launched if WWIII started.
Those are the ones we know about, imagine if they have stronger bombs under wraps!
well they even have bigger payloads now and whatever is being developed that can obliterate entire regions.
But thanks for the site I think I will play with it and be a dictator with an itchy nuclear finger.
They totally have stronger ones indeed! but just with a Tsar Bomba you can probably wipe out small countries like Singapore.
