What I Accomplished and Learned Today on Steemit and the Roadblocks I Faced

in #steemit7 years ago

I spent a lot of time on Steemit today, the most time I've spent since joining the platform last week. I feel like I learned and accomplished a lot today, but there were definitely some roadblocks along the way

The first thing I wanted to do was write a well written post that looked good with multiple images. I decided to write about how I got my son a Nintendo Switch and how Steemit users could find one themselves. I began formatting my post. My first problem was that my image was too big. I felt like it took up the entire screen when someone read my post. I discovered that you cannot change the image size with markdown and I could not get it to work using html either. So I used Pixlr Express to shrink the size of my initial image. My next problem was that I wanted to center the smaller image. I was able to accomplish this using html centering. I proceeded to code the rest of the post. I wasn't able to post it until I added Doctype html at the top. The coding structure was also strange the way I attempted to do it, but I was able to publish my post. Check it out How I Found a Nintendo Switch at Retail Price and You Can Too.

I was able to publish my post but now I wanted to promote it. The first place I went to was the upvote channel on discord. I discovered you have to wait 20 minutes after you post to upvote a post. This also puts you in cool down, so I failed that attempt. I was able to create a profile picture on discord so I did accomplish something.

I earned some steem dollars last week so I thought I would try to promote using Rando Whale Vote. This worked very well and was easy to do. My post jumped from .01 to over $4.00. Thanks @randowhale!

Next I tried to use booster to boost my post. Using this was very similar to Rando Whale Vote, but after 3 hours my post never got boosted. I sent a reply to @booster and my money was instantly refunded. I don't know what happened with my post, but I was very happy with the customer service. I would try it again for my next post. Hopefully it will work.

The next thing I did was join Steemit Superstars Facebook group. This group is ran by @stackin and @mrwalt. I feel like this will help me be successful.

From here I read a lot of random posts and met new people. My follower list grew substantially today. I replied to a post from @jerrybanfield, whose blog I discovered after I joined Steemit. I watched some of his Youtube videos and I am impressed. Anyways I received a reply and an upvote on my reply, which I appreciated.

This was my first time interacting with some of the power users on Steemit. I also tried downloading the app eSteem for iPhone, but it seemed to crash every time I tried to use it. I also looked at some notification apps, but didn't find anything I really liked yet. There is definitely room for improvement with the user experience.

Overall, it was a day of learning with some successes and some things that I feel like will help me in the future. There are definitely things I would of done differently like waiting 20 minutes to try and upvote on discord. I feel like I'm meeting a ton of really interesting people. I figured this post would be a good post for new users who have the basics down and want to try new things. This was my experience, hopefully it helps you with yours. I get it how frustrating things on here can be. It took me while before I could wrap my head around all the moving parts.

Thank you sharing the Facebook page. I was not aware of this group at all.

Your welcome, I think the group is a great idea!

This is awesome post @legosnjoysticks! Many minnows can learn from this :)

This is an outstanding post. Really, truly, great work. You have a new fan here. I wish you all the best, and Godspeed. Monday I'm putting this post into Best of Steemit for a special award. Well done.

Wow, thank you very much. I need to update this post because luckily I copied the text before I published it. My post disappeared right after I published it. There was no record it ever existed. I was able to paste my entire post back in and make a new title, but if I didn't do that all that work would of been for nothing. So another word of advice, save the text of your posts before publishing. That is one thing you will not regret! Thanks again for the kind words. I really appreciate it!

That's happened to several folks the last couple days. It's not a regular thing on Steemit and I don't know why it's happening. But your advice is good -- save the text before publishing!

Steemit is a complicated ecosystem, with a lot of changing parts. It looks like you are off to a great start. Some of the posts by @sykochica have a lot of good help for doing all the markdown stuff. Have a great time on Steemit and here's to your success here.

I'll have to check out those markdown posts this morning. I think I'm going to print out the markdown style guide so I can get used to typing using markdown instead of copying and pasting. I did make an html template that is helping me.

That sounds like a plan. I use a free Markdown editor - Markdown Pad 2. It's an offline editor that shows one panel with all the markdown text and another panel that shows what it will look like online. It sure has helped me.

I created a simple Google Doc template that makes it so much easier. I found a markdown Chrome extension as well.

Great! Once you get your tools in place, it's a lot easier! Steem on! :D

I totally agree.

Wow, yes! That was great thinking on your part. I lose stuff occasionally and it drives me nuts. So glad you didn't lose this.

Interesting. I will have to check that group out. I am just kind of plugging away, making posts when I have new, and what I hope is good content to add. Thanks for this post. Upvoting, resteeming (and already following) ;)

Thanks, I'm doing a lot of plugging away myself.
