[Blockchain Story #3] Solving Social Problems Through Smart Contracts

Today, I am going to share the third blockchain story.
I am a researcher who is currently waiting for my postdoctoral degree and preparing for employment and study abroad. I asked to one of my friends who live in Texas, 'What if I am going to study in the US I worry the most?' That time was November last year. He was working at the University of Texas, and the issue at that time was a 'gun accident'. A gunman in the Texas church suddenly came to the Sunday service and killed the people indiscriminately. Of course, the distance from the University of Texas to the church was long, and the students at the University of Texas were very frightened by the incident.

Gun accident that are constantly popping into the United States... I do not understand why they are still watching these dangers. These dangerous incidents require strong government regulation. (my opinion)

Looking at these problems before studying abroad, I feel as if it could happen to me. I thought that a smart contract based on a block chain would be able to solve this situation.

American gun incidents have been increasing year after year, and the Congress, which succumbed to the firearms' association lobby, did not approve the midterm enforcement laws, so the Obama administration decided to go ahead with other crackdowns. President Barack Obama released a new firearm regulatory order on January 5, 2016.

I have expanded the scope of registration for gun sales workers, who are obliged to conduct inquiries of gun buyers. As a result, firearm sales workers are obliged to register according to certain criteria, regardless of where they are sold. This is aimed at a gun sales website on the Internet. In the US, there was a heated debate over this order. What is really needed is that Congress will change the law itself, but if this is not possible, it will be a convenient way to circumvent Parliament. This is because the lobby of the interest group does not play a role and especially the legislative activities are not done properly by the interests of the members of the parliament. Therefore, the government will make a great use of administrative orders and systems to bypass the parliament in the urgent situation in the future.

In fact, the parliament of the country cannot represent the people’ opinion properly, so the people will do all these functions in the future society by themselves. As a result, the power of people in the future becomes stronger. The clue is the ‘Smart contract’. Smart contracts are programmed to execute transactions automatically when a certain condition is satisfied through a block chain. They are already used for transferring ownership, inheritance, and giving. For example, in the following way.

It is also expected that in the future, the block-chain technology will be able to distribute the government power more effectively and make it fairer by taking part of the government's functions.

Using this smart contract, purchasing and transferring firearms will be approved only by people who meet certain conditions and will be able to make purchases only to people who need firearms. I think we can expect a safer society like this.
