Deciding What to Write About – Researching – Synthesis of a Blog Post. A Personal Approach by @katerinaramm (Part 3 – Synthesis of a Blog)

Synthesis of a blog post in steemit (and beyond)

The most common questions of someone starting their blog on steemit are: (a)What to write about; (b) How to research for my topic and (c) how to format my text in my blog? I have tried giving my point of view for the first two and I still owe you the third part of my series.

Before we start, you need to have your text written down, a short summary – introduction, main body (split in paragraphs) and a short outro (conclusion).

I will be getting into details immediately, but please take a moment and look at those three screen shots of previous posts by me.

The evolvement of my posts

evolution1.jpg

The second image is of a very recent post of mine. It might seem nice, it has paragraphs but it has no headlines. This makes it difficult for someone to identify what interest them or what it is about. The third image is a more clear one. You understand almost immediately what it is about and the headlines help in identifying which part you wish to read.

My very first post in the first image is pure text, I did not even know anything about formatting then so it is normal.
When you look at it, it might seem intimidating to read it all at once! No introduction, no headlines, no formatting whatsoever. I am surprised it even got some attention back then.

dot.jpg STEP 1 - Choose your image, headline and first words wisely

Take some time and pick a representative image for your blog. The image + headline are the primary reasons someone will click or not your blog post.
(The other reason someone will upvote your post is that you are a whale, so you will get upvotes and clicks any ways – but if you are reading this, then I guess you are minnows like me :P)
Note that 23 characters appear as a snippet when someone checks their feed on steemit on desktop and appx 27 on mobile.
You can check this post about how to create a catchy headline

dot.jpg STEP 2 - Write a short introductory paragraph about the topic of your post.

Take a few moments to craft a short paragraph of 2-3 sentences for your readers. This should be the most important points of your topic. It should be concise and easy to read. Do not be afraid to use bold text if necessary.

dot.jpg STEP 3 - Create Headlines

You are creating a post to be read. Headlines provide easy information to the readers about the contents of the post and about each of your paragraph. Sometimes they can even help you understand if you have a 'gap' in your text and where you can add or you should eliminate information

dot.jpg STEP 4 - Keep the paragraphs short

Paragraphs should be kept short and somewhere I have read that it is best if they have different sizes (I am not sure about this, you should come up with the best solution for you).

Each paragraph should have its own subject and when necessary, leave an empty line between them.

dot.jpg STEP 5 - Proof read and correct any grammar or spelling issues.

Grammar, spelling and punctuation are very important for your blog. Pay extra attention to them. After a comma, dot, or any other punctuation mark you should add one space.

  • This is not very correct, what do you think?Would you write it this way?
  • This is a bit more correct, do you agree? There should be spaces between the punctuation and next word.

Αν γράφετε Ελληνικά, προσοχή στους τόνους!

dot.jpg STEP 6 - Enhance with photos or videos

You may enhance your post with photos, videos, gifs but do not over do it! The images or videos should be relevant, it is best if they are not too big, if possible keep them centered or justified.
Remember that their main goal is to add information or rest the eye between too much text.

dot.jpg STEP 7 - Craft a catchy closure

Whether it will be a conclusion, an outro, a synopsis, an assessment of your story, it is useful to craft it.
This paragraph should be pointing out what you have included in your body text, what you expect from others and anything else you find useful in order to make it stand out for your reader. Usually the ending is our conclusion and what the reader will remember most.

Note You do not know how someone landed to your blog. Steemit's original content comes high in the search engine's result page. I have seen blog posts that in the end write a small 'about me', that include social media accounts to follow. You can include anything suits you or even a 'Call to Action'1 for people who read your post.

dot.jpg STEP 8 - Be Water .. my Friends; Be Water

As I had written down in one of my favorite posts, that I enjoyed so much crafting ... How to make the most out of steemit

Be consistent & Keep Writing. With every post improve your style, your quality of writing, your posting themes.
Bruce Lee has said "Running water never gets stale. So you just got to keep on flowing".. Be water :)

These tips are spot-on and are definately going to yield good results if followed.

i would like to add a little more

  • Be yourself: In the process of trying to copy a writing style, do not overdo it to the extent that you compromise your personality
  • Connect: Try as much as possible to connect with other people on the platform. it is a community and thus we should relate with other people
  • Dont stop: This has been stated in the post but i would like to mention it again. Consistency is key and you never can tell which blog post would make the world to see you.

AWESOME POST!

Absolutely and thank you for noting all these!
I already include them in either the post above or in the linked posts, but have not included them per se, because the topic is about how to make a blog post synthesis, assuming you already have content, consistency, communication :)
Again thank you so much for visiting and commenting!

You are welcome.
There is always something to learn on your blog!

A well-structured writing is what sets quality apart. What you described is a universal writing method, which we all learned from high school, and to this day I follow diligently. Structure is also extremely important when writing scientific articles. Clarity and precision are key. All my posts are mostly written in the fashion you described :)

Thanks for resteeming this. Even though I follow katerinaramm the post timing must have been that I missed it in my feed. I'm going to share this with the folks I'm helping to move to Steemit from FB.

We do learn this early in our writing education, but it can be enticing to skip so much of what we know just rushing to get a post out on a semi-regular schedule. It's good to have reminders like this.

Thank you so much @indigooocean! It is very encouraging to hear these words from you, it really means a lot to me :)

❤️

Thank you for visiting!
A post's quality is always the key; the formatting can only make it more appealing and easy to read.
The formatting also depends on the character and style of the author, as well as on its topic. Posting an image with a story might not require all the above.
However, you are absolutely right that it is a universal writing method and structure should be always considered, especially when writing scientific articles! I am happy to get to know more people like you or @indigoocean on steemit that I can use as an example :)

Useful article hope it will help me to improve
Thank you @katerinaramm

Everything you write is fine by me!!!!
Everybody in Steemit- and not only- should be following your advices!!!
I certainly do @katerinramm😀😚!!!

Agree with the positive comments made thus far regarding your post!

Can you explain or provide a link explaining the “code” for formattings used in this article? I.e. image with text, text columns, etc?

Οσο για το λινκ explaining the 'code' for formatting - you may see one of my previous posts, not sure if you have seen it >> Guide for MarkDown
Let me know if there is something specific that might not be mentioned in my above guide!
Thanks for the resteem 💙

*You have the option to click the ‘Editor’ or leave as is ‘Raw Html’

From your post Guide for MarkDown which i can't believe I missed, and I can't believe I haven't noticed that "editor" button!???!? I haven't tried the editor yet, so we'll see if I actually like it.

And as usual your post (Guide for MarkDown) is awesome. Too bad I didn't see it earlier!

A few questions:

I tried to embed a D.Tube video and it didn't work... any idea why it might not embed?

Also, I've seen multiple posts where a photo is inserted, and it's relatively small, and there is an option to click on it to view it larger... do you know how that can be done?

Σ'ευχαριστώ και πάλι!

  • I never use the editor .. :) I prefer the raw html :P
  • Regarding Dtube, I don't think it is embeddable (is this correct?) You only get the link and a small image (to be clicked upon)
  • Regarding the clickable image, please see below ..

STEP 1. You upload both images (big + small dimension)
bb2.jpg
bb2b.jpg

STEP 2. You remove the ![text]( and the last parenthesis

STEP 3. You add the code as:

<a href="https://steemitimages.com/DQmSCQFPwCSaHawE7fgQtKpidX9yE4tnmjJ5U1P9DamK58M/bb2.jpg"><img src="https://steemitimages.com/DQmRjLcsNohWZWJoeXF6pzM9x1qQHBT8YaGq5hx4PeYfS2c/bb2b.jpg"></a>

The below will be the result

Thank you! You’re the best!

I tried the editor. Actually I opened it and then closed it. I like writing the code too. :)

regarding d.tube this is where I got that idea from... ( :

haha, it all depends on what each one means by 'embedded' I guess :)
(testing putting link)

<a href="https://ipfs.infura.io/ipfs/QmWDPQNhFrj3k6TzvgFTvZh44GLZppi3GFDWvSs12MGJdb"><img src="https://steemitimages.com/0x0/https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmewVp8XCfMax1E3p4EvdErWYw7ezpth3wMtsSS4uobhFG"></a>

  1. You go to the post > lets say ... https://steemit.com/music/@zangmore/kpefhtar
You click on the image > right click > copy image location [this will go in the <img src="https://steemitimages.com/0x0/https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmewVp8XCfMax1E3p4EvdErWYw7ezpth3wMtsSS4uobhFG">
  2. You go to the dtube link and you take the 'copy video location' after clicking right click on the video.
Then you use the above code to embed it ..

Unfortunately dtube cannot yet be embedded the same way as youtube, but I believe that this solution is better than just putting the link.

Thank you to @zangmore for allowing me to post his video. (I am sure he would not mind If I asked)

p.s. you are right, I had not checked the dtube info before posting it in the markdown guide .. But apparently your question was a good chance to eventually figure out how it works

!!!!!! :D

Yeah I guess that embedment style is good enough for dtube!

Especially since dtube (as far as I know) posts directly to Steemit.

So I would have to create a separate account to have the video upload to dtube without going to my Steemit blog. Then take the link and embed it, dtube style (or @katerinaramm style) into my Steemit post...

[“thinking out loud” helps for me to understand things...]

Nice music too!

Thanks again!

Thanks for the resteem-able quality posts :) (you're welcome for the resteem)

As always, great information. Will be sharing with my crypto/steemit group. Thanks for all the work you put into these posts.
