They can definitely acquire a company/owner of steemit.com. Here is profile of this company: https://angel.co/steemit .

The software that is steemit.com is open source, and the steem blockchain does not require steemit.inc to function. So I don't see how acquiring steemit inc would do anything. A different steemit, still running on the steem blockchain could spring up the second the first one was bought.

One thing that could happen is someone could purchase steemit.com (or any of these other products) and try to monetize it in different ways. They could turn on post reward beneficiaries to collect a portion of the daily rewards, use ads, or even restructure the site to focus people onto specific topics that might be related to whatever other businesses they're invested in. I'd also assume that buying steemit (the company) would also grant them control over the huge amount of steem that they have.

However, you're right about the blockchain and the open source software - they wouldn't be buying it to own those.

Also if steemit.com reaches some scale (let say 100 million users), and then is acquired by Facebook, then even though one can try to replicate steemit on steem blockchain, but because of network effects it would be difficult to compete with original steemit.com (acquired by Facebook)
