Want to see the top posts in last 24 hours - rank calculated by minnow 1, dolphin 2, whale 3, megawhale 4

in #steemit8 years ago

After having read countless complaints about the whales having too much power, I decided to make an alternate ranking. To make it simple I just have 4 categories, with corresponding weights. The "plankton" has no voice as there are way too many bots which would really skew things.

I know there is no consensus on what exactly a minnow, dolphin, etc. are, I used the following scale:

#define STEEMIT_MINNOW_BALANCE 100
#define STEEMIT_DOLPHIN_BALANCE 1000
#define STEEMIT_WHALE_BALANCE 100000
#define STEEMIT_MEGAWHALE_BALANCE 1000000

I use Kv as the unit, which is a kilo VEST, so if a mega VEST is worth about 1 BTC, then a kiloVEST is worth about a dollar (ok I am an optimist that BTC will be $1000). So despite the arbitrariness of the thresholds, it is at least a much more linear view of things without any time based penalties, and tries to filter out the bots and newbies who have not invested any funds, nor written any posts. Still the whales have more voice as they should.

The above are the top 100 posts using the above scale among the posts created within past 36hours. If there is sufficient demand (as evidenced by upvotes to this), I can automate this and post it under @rank on a regular basis. I can also implement a lookup for a specific article so that if you make a comment with: @rank author/title it will respond with that post's ranking. Maybe even implement #tag specific rankings, so plz comment on desired features. I already have the code that will detect a message to a specific account and make a customized response.

hi , just addet 8$ for your efforts ;)

anyway, this will be a great way for people to learn, what kind of posting attracts which group and to optimize their posts !

interesting thing is, that a lot dolphins have a huge impact too, and if you add 1-5 whales to the sauce magic happens !

Great having you here ! i will follow you

much appreciated!
I was surprised at the impact of the dolphins and also the lack of impact of the minnows. There are so many of them, but it seems a lot are just passive. hopefully my rank posts will help change this.

Thanks for the points @jl777 . Interesting analysis.

Great analysis @jl777 and I Upvoted your witness account. I try staying engaged with regular voting, comments to great posts and add my occasional original post as time allows and inspiration strikes. I am working on getting to Dolphin so when you can check out my posts I'd welcome your feedback and Upvotes.

How many planktons here ?
99.9 % ?

majority of users are not minnows yet, but the data shows that dolphins are voting a lot more than minnows. Even though much fewer dolphins, they are very engaged. So my guess is that at first people are more likely to be lurkers and only after a while do they start posting and upvoting actively

it also seems pretty clear that what the whale's like, everybody else likes

Why not? We can try it. And then see what needs to be corrected.

Where can i see plakton rank ? I might be there.

I filter out votes from planktons as it is contaminated by all the upvoting bots

Good content. This is something I would enjoy seeing as a regular post. It was fun to scroll through and see what all the top posts were, along with your minnow, dolphin, whale, mega-whale analysis. It would also be cool to see the same analysis done with a larger time frame, like the top posts of the month.

there is a LOT more I can do, but no sense to do it if people arent interested. however it seems that there is a decent level of interest, so a few more whale upvotes and I can justify spending the time to automate a daily ranking post. I already got the account @rank in case this would be popular. Also if there is anybody that can help with html, I can output a better formatted list

It's interesting to study the data. I'd love to see more and tossed in my $4,- vote accordingly.

What are the problems you are having regarding html? I might be able to spot you.

I have 0 HTML and just have the text link. I think it would be possible to make it look like the normal pages with the graphic and nice formatting, but HTML is not me

I think its a great idea, but its fundamentally flawed as a means to address the complaints you say you're addressing. Because whale and megawhale votes, even a very few, effectively pin a post to the front page. Which mean that theyll get more votes of all other types.

Im sure there will be exceptions, but generally, you would expect to see MW and whale upvoted posts upvoted by many others, esp since many whales have (pretty easy to figure out lists) of authors that they autovote for, so dolphins can come in in front of them to get the curation rewards.

what is your suggestion then? I have all the data and can parse it however is needed
I know a lot of posts dont get whalevotes for a while, so while what you say is certainly part of what happens, the reverse happens too

as an example, here are the top 5 trending posts right now... the key point to look at is the number of votes in the first 15 minutes, because thats bots and people anticipating bots....

The only one that seems to not have been auto upvote pinned to the top of the page is the andrewfoodlist one, and tbh what it looks like there is he just got lucky and ned saw his post... and somebody seems to have benefitted mainly from his own upvote and other upvotes associated with him.

https://steemd.com/steemit/@somebody/steem-white-paper-translated-into-chinese

as a side note, this effect has gotten way worse since they started paying posts out for a month afterwards.

To me, a good statistic is what percentage of posts making more than X do so without a MW vote in the first 16 minutes. I think youll find that for X>2000, that number is actually quite low.

very few posts make >$2000 so clearly posts without MW votes will have very few >$2000
To me, I am deemphasising the dollars and counting the people, with a small range of multiplier. Granted, the onscreen time for trending makes for a disproportionate effect, but maybe if we can devise a ranking system that is more reflective of overall value to the community as evidenced by the sheer number of upvotes by real people, then this ranking could be an alternate way for something to be "pinned"

very few posts make >$2000 so clearly posts without MW votes will have very few >$2000

The key part of that was "in the first 16 minutes", but anyway, i see your point about disregarding the money.

TBH, im not 100% sure even how they determine "trending" its not all $ (though total $ earned clearly plays a role.)

so the numbers [126 168 20 13]

thats minnow votes, dolphin votes, whale votes, MW votes?

Keep up the good work guys. I did notice that when I posted a few days ago, like 47 bots upvoted right away. It happened to 2 or 3 of my posts. Now they have done that to my last few posts. See my blog when you get a chance. Thanks.

yeah those were just plankton bots that were running wild for a bit then got shut down.

Its something ive been thinking about... tbh i don't really know... thats the thing... once a whale "rings the bell" theres really no way to unring it. Id say try to look at the amount of dolphin and minnow votes the posts get before the first whale votes, but the whales are really really quick... as a funny example, that famous makeup post got several whale votes in the first two minutes it was up (it was a 9 minute video).

Yeah, there are some posts that get some minnow and dolphin groundswell first, and that attracts whales... but i think youll find two things:

  1. Its more the exception than the norm, especially for the highest earning posts.
  2. Its happening less and less frequently.

I think making the platform open source is a big step in the right direction... i had actually given up and decided to sell off before that happened... now im more on the fence.....

gee, how long has steemit been out of beta?
have any of the rules been set in stone?
steemit doesnt have to outrun the bear, it just needs to be better than reddit for now

Ha fair enough i suppose. But reddit has a head start. And in a way so does the bear.

And yeah, i recognize its still in beta. And at the end of the day, i already took 100K profit on my investment... so maybe i should have faith in the people who already made me a small boatload of money.

In the past week or so ive been like half a click away from powering up the last 5.5k steem im holding and half a click away from selling it off... usually the later right after i look at the front page. Ill probably end up powering it up... the influx of users from china is too big to ignore...

but i dont know...better than reddit... are we... im not really much of a reddit guy maybe my standards are too high.

Hi @jl777 Can you explain exactly how to use @rank , I tried it but nothing happened. Maybe I am not doing something right? Thanks.
@streetstyle

its not activated yet as it requires keeping the dataset live and right now I just generate it manually as a proof of concept.

ok @jl777 I was wondering about that. It sounds interesting, so I wanted to test it out. Well, keep us posted on it. thanks.
