The concept of private messages is that they are private.
All the contents of this website (that people write with markdown), are stored in the blockchain, which is easily downloadable by anyone, and therefore public.
What we need is a 2nd layer on top of Steemit for private messages.
I'm being half-facetious, but I think we'll figure something out. The social network Minds had an encrypted chat function. Is it possible to add to the base layer of Steemit?

I don't know much about Steemit yet. Can't the private message feature be added? After all, this is just the beta version.
BTW, I just sent 0.017btc to trade for Steem using the sidebar on the right. How long should it take for me to get the steem?
