To Auto-Vote or Not To Auto-Vote, That Is The Question?

in #steemit7 years ago

The controversial question on Steemit. Should you be using a bot to vote for you? Or does that defeat the purpose of the social network? Isn't the whole point of Steemit to read content and then manually upvote it if you like it?

Why Would I Use A Bot To Vote For Me?

👫 Support your friends: 👯 I agree that part of the fun of Steemit is being able to go through your feed, get lost down a rabbit hole and discover new people and fresh content that you want to upvote. It is also nice to be able to check in with your Steemit friends whose content you know you enjoy and read their stuff. But sometimes, I don't realise that my friends have posted, or I am busy with work, or life and then 2 days have passed and I realise that my friends have written a great post that I didn't even see!

💯 Boost your curation rewards: 💸 You make money from upvoting on other peoples posts, not just on writing your own content. So you may as well make the most curation rewards you can each day. Having a bot to vote on your friends content that you know you will enjoy anyway, allows you to earn curation rewards effortlessly when you may be tied up elsewhere in life.

Which Bots Can I Use To Auto-Vote For Me?

1. Streemian

Streemian is an awesome tool, that you can use to automatically upvote on your favourite authors posts, follow curation trails and schedule posts to ensure the maximum amount of views.

One thing that I love about Streemian is that you can also use it to set up notifcations for when your favourite authors make a new post, like this:

So that Streemian can email me like this so I get a little nudge to go and check out my favourite people's posts:

2. SteemVoter

With not quite as many features as Streemian, but a much simpler process for account set-up, Steemvoter is still a simple and easy way to choose people you support to upvote consistently.

My Opinion?

I think that these options are great for supporting friends, or fellow team mates if you are in a group or team here on Steemit! I like to use Streemian though because it sends me notifications to read my favourite author's posts, and that way I can make sure I read the content I like and can go and comment on their stuff! I also still love to randomly browse through Steemit, find new people everyday and upvote new content if I like it!

How do you guys prefer to upvote? Manual? Automatic? or a mix of both? Let me know in the comments! 😍

I think a good mix of manual and automatic upvoting is pretty good. Manual upvoting is especially helpful for finding those diamond in the rough high-quality posts from minnows. And automatic upvotes can be good for supporting your friends, especially if you've been offline most of the day due to work or other commitments.

And I learned something new from your post today - I didn't know you could set notifications for new posts in Streemian from your favorite authors! Thanks @hannahlicious!

thanks a lot @cereblace. Yeah totally agree with you :) and yeaah the notifications are awesome they stop me from forgetting about people whose content I really want to see :)

You're very welcome @hannahlicious! Those Streemian notifications are awesome - now I can know exactly when my favorites post throughout the day!

As much as I hate the impersonal way of bots, I have found a problem with social media. I seem to have less time to spend reading and writing than others do, and friends can misunderstand if I miss their posts... so perhaps a bit further down the line I will reconsider. Thanks for giving food for thought!

thanks @elaine54 yes I do feel guilty if I see I have missed someones post, so the bot helps to autovote when i'm too busy and send me a notification to remind me to read later :) thanks for stopping by!!

I like to upvote posts that i find searching new posts myself, but people I know that create great consistent content I like to use a bot in case I miss there post.

Yeah absolutely, I think thats the best way to go @gniksivart :)

Very interesting question @hannahlicious, I upvote manual. And now I'm following you.

thanks so much @renantg :) I appreciate it!

I feel like the platform on a pc just isn't convenient enough to use in order to keep up with everyone we are connected too. So I suppose using this to at least control our support system is a cool thing to apply. However, that shouldn't mean people should abandon the site just like that and leave it up to a bot. I see your concern with that and even though I would apply this eventually, I will get on here every chance I get!

#Upvoted

thank you so much, yeah definitely the bot is good for giving support to others we like but I am like you and on here every chance I get too!! :)

I personally prefer manual. Totally see the use of bots though especially for those that follow a lot of people! I'm kind of at the stage where i need to consider it more or cull the list of people I'm following but will valiantly struggle on because I'm unreasonably stubborn 🤣

Hahaha I feel you on being stubborn :) I love the notifications as well just cuz im so forgetful otherwise!

Right now I'm doing everything manually and have a little sheet of paper that I've scribbled notes on to to remind me to specifically look at blogs from certain authors so that I can keep up with them.

I like it as it is right now but at some point I may get into some automatic stuff.

Haha thats awesome that you're actually writing things down by hand :) Yeah I guess as you follow more people you might need to start getting notifications and things :)

Yeah...I debated whether to actually admit that or not...haha...and thanks for using the word 'awesome' to describe it instead 'old school', 'ridiculous' or other potentially more fitting descriptions :)

Yeah...I'll need to update my system at some point I'm sure.

I personally think, that with all the bots that are already here in just the first couple months of steemit, that manual is the right way to go. Imagine how many more bots there are going to be in another year? I find it most enjoyable to find new content to manually vote on. such as this one. i don't know who you are, and haven't read any of your stuff before. and if i had a bot, i might not even be trying to find a post like yours. so like i said, i think manual is the best way for creativity to flourish. maybe i won't make as much profit, but I think I'll be better off in a way.

Yeah definitely, I love finding new content to upvote on too! I just like to have streemian there to upvote consistently as well on friends who I know produce amazing content, and to send me notifcations so I make sure i don't miss out on their content and can go read and comment myself :)
Very happy that you like to explore Steemit and have stumbled accross my post :) and I agree Steemit is not just about profit, creativity is very important here :)

I guess if you only use a bot to upvote a few friends, it's ok.
But some here have abused the use of bots.
I guess that makes it a good thing for steemit to only recharge voting power by 20% a day and reduce our voting power by 2% every vote.

thanks for reading @point. Yeah absolutely, and I am interested to know @point what you consider to be abuse of bots? Like if people are manually upvoting for everyone they follow, or?
