Depression is an English word which literally means or signifies a downward trend. From a lay man's point of view health wise, it's a state of repressed mood.

But medically speaking what does it mean? It's a mental disorder in which there is sustained sadness or depressed mood, feeling of loss of energy and inability to undertake activities and lack of interest in engaging in previously pleasurable events and inability to be engaged in enjoyment (anhedonia).

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF DEPRESSION?

This can be grouped into 2 categories A and B.

  • Depressed mood
  • Lack of interest
  • Lack of energy/Activity

CATEGORY B

  • Reduced concentration
  • Low self esteem
  • Worthlessness
  • Feeling of guilt
  • Pessimism
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Disturbance in appetite

GRADING OF SEVERITY OF DEPRESSION

It can be mild, moderate or severe

ETIOLOGY OF DEPRESSION

  • Genetic
  • Environmental factors
  • Early childhood environment
  • Social environment
  • Psychological factors
  • Personality
  • Physical factors
  • Hormonal disturbances
  • Substance abuse

WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS IN THE BRAIN OF THE DEPRESSED?

The human brain has certain modulating functions in which it uses to regulate and keep itself in a stable state. Amongst these regulatory mechanism is the topmost known as the Neurotransmitters they are substances in the brain that keeps the checks and balances in order. There are excitatory neurotransmitters and there are inhibitory neurotransmitters.

In the brains of those individuals that are severely depressed for example, it was discovered that the level of a particular neurotransmitter called serotonin was very low. This is the main reason for the use of serotonin enhancing drugs in the brain in the treatment of depression.

CAN WE KEEP DEPRESSION FAR AND HOW?

Yes we can by showing and spreading love all around the world. If you notice anyone with any of the above symptoms the ideal thing to do is to go closer to the person and try to establish a rapport. Who knows just the little rapport of positivity can invigorate him/her and avert suicidal thoughts.

You can visit a psychologist or a Psychiatrist if you feel you are depressed and do not allow it for far too long. You can also alert the appropriate team of health providers (Psychiatrist) if you know anyone who is showing any of the above symptoms.

The world would be a better place if only everyone has the Knowlegde of doing good to his fellow mankind whom are his direct neighbors next door.
