Defying the odds - Women in Pakistan Airforce

in #steemit7 years ago

Getting up at the break of dawn, indulging in rigorous training and strict adherence to rules and regulations, such is the life of these women serving in the Pakistan air force.

In its seven decades of independence, Pakistan has seen a tremendous increase in the participation of women in all walks of life, the induction of women in Pakistan air force is one such example. Be it as general duty pilots or aeronautical engineers, these women in blue work side by side their male counterparts on equal footing.

Although the induction of women in air force has been going on for a long time, it was mainly as doctors and psychologists. It wasn’t until 1995 that Air chief marshal (retired) Abass khattak took the revolutionary step of allowing women to enlist in a variety of fields. Taking the initiative one step further, ACM Mushaf Ali Mir opened up the fighter pilot branch to women as well in 2002, providing the female gender with ample platform to demonstrate their capabilities.

For the women training at the PAF academy, this opportunity has led to not only overcoming the prejudice against women but also showcasing their capabilities and gaining a position in the society that had previously been out of reach for this gender.

‘‘It has been marvellous, from the training to the punishments and all the exercises; they have instilled in us a sense of purpose, honour, integrity and courage. It is an honour to serve the nation and be a part of the Pakistan air force'' says a young female officer at the prestigious PAF.

However, life at the Risalpur academy is not all work and no play for the lady cadets. They are offered a wide variety of sports to choose from and play, be it table tennis, basketball or cricket. Lady Cadets also have the facilities to practice horse riding and swimming. The academy authorities never neglect the importance of social events for its personnel either. Therefore, social gatherings for instructors, cadets and their families are organized regularly. APDC-all Pakistan declamation contest is also arranged for the cadets where students from 40- 50 institutes all over Pakistan participate and compete to win the contest.

Following the advice of the father of our nation, Quaid who said ''no nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you '' these women continue to break gender barriers and work towards making the nation a great one. We salute these ladies who are an epitome of courage and grace and hope they continue to make us proud!
