Worried About Steemit - A CriticismsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

First off I want to state that I truly believe Steemit can be something great. It tries something different. It tries to give creators credit for the hard work they put in their blogs. And I really like how the community is supposed to give money to valuable content. Without further ado, on to my thoughts:

Yesterday evening I was browsing through steemit - as usual. And I couldn't help but wonder how much content is obviously just copy and pasted from youtube or some other platform. It just extremely annoys me when I see posts like "A few informations about x ICO", or "Have you seen the video of this shark attack?!" and when you open it, it just leads to some youtube video - clearly not made by the poster. Not to mention all these nsfw/porn vids or gifs. I have nothing against sharing informative or funny youtube videos, go for it. But I think it is just not okay that you get money for doing so. At least the poster should acknowledge in his post that the video wasn't made by him. I just think Steemit should take better care of this situation. I believe a lot of youtubers would want to move here so they can get paid for their videos on a fairer basis, but it will never happen if you can just "steal" their videos and get paid doing so. There has to be a way to prevent this from happening.

Another thing that attracted my attention yesterday was the fact that there are a lot of "alternative facts" circulating around on here. I want to be really clear on this: I am 100% supporting free speech. I think you should be allowed to say/write anything, and be judged based on the validity of your arguments.
I just couldn't help but notice that there is a surprising amount of "flat earthers", "evangelists" etc. active on here. And they are doing really well. Now I don't want to say that these people should be thrown out of this community, I just think there needs to be a more logical, fact based counter movement also being attracted to this platform. Maybe I just randomly stumbled accross a lot of these "vaccines kill your babies", "your government lies to you about the real shape of the earth" kind of posts - I don't know, maybe I am way off on this one.

So these are my observations I wanted to share with you. Please let me know your opinion in the comment section down below. I would really appreciate it! Let's discuss this and keep makeing Steemit a great place for everyone!

Greetings,

This is a natural movement.

The current Steem Power gives a too high reward. Which results in a sea of newbies posting links to video's. Hoping to make a few bucks.

Once the platform matures, and more quality content is available. The plagiarized content will be worth less. And quality post will get higher rewards.

I propose the following problem:

The current community of content creators is too small, so posts normally seen as spam don't get any competition.

Yes thats very true. I hope it gets better over time.
It just feels really bad seeing these posts getting quite a lot of money and other bloggers sitting on a couple of cents, although they put in a lot of work creating their posts.
Thanks for commenting!

@ggorwell, I share your observations, but I do not see any solution that wouldn't go the usual way, i.e. some sort of board of people who "censor". I just do not upvote that stuff. And the fact that there are all sorts of crazy things is something which I even like. If somebody thinks the earth is flat - why not? Maybe he's right - who knows ... /s

Yes I didn't come up with a good idea either. Maybe a system where you have to link yourself up with the video you post - like a signature or something like that. And of course we don't know if the earth is really round - if somebody fell off he wouldn't be able to tell us...
