Steemit's Cycle Of Trust
From seed to harvest, what we put into the Steemit community comes around to feed us.
The Cycle Of Trust
I often state that everything is a circle. Life. History. Investing. Even cryptocurrency. The cycle moves, going from bottom to top, peak to trough.
I believe that the underlying key to these cycles is trust and cooperation. Think about it.
If life if you have trust and cooperation then times are probably good or at least getting better. If your life situation lacks trust and cooperation, things are going down.
In history, we have times of world cooperation where we all prosper, and then conflict (lack of trust and cooperation) occurs and suffering increases.
The same thing happens with investments.
When we all are working together towards a similar goal, we all get richer. This prosperity attracts uncooperative and untrustworthy people who use this success to enrich themselves at the cost of others. These bad actors come in and misbehave. Eventually trust is broken and the cycle turns downward. People point fingers at each other, sell their investments which causes the price to fall, and we all lose.
After some time those bad actors are removed or they move on to scam something else and the remaining participants cooperate with each other. Trust builds, and they all start to create riches.
The cycle starts again, but only if the entity survived the cycle.
Cryptocurrency Cycle Of Trust
Now picture this as it pertains to cryptocurrency.
For a long time only the true believers were invested in crypto. ICO’s were created to fill needs not yet met, or at least not met well enough. People bought into each new investment based off of cooperation and trust behind what they were buying.
Everyone got richer.
Unfortunately, this causes the bad actors to smell an easy target and so they come in to grab what they can while the going is good.
You only need to think about the disappearing ICO teams (vanishing with millions of YOUR dollars), Ponzi schemes like Bitconnect, and other scams such as what Tether most likely is.
All of these things are bad actors eroding the trust and cooperation of the market.
So where are we on the cryptocurrency cycle of trust?
I believe that there are now too many uncooperative people out there for cryptocurrency to continue to reach new highs.
Steemit’s Cycle Of Trust
From seed to harvest, what we put into the Steemit community comes around to feed us.
While I was at Steemfest one particular narrative came up in multiple discussions I had with wholly unrelated people. You might have heard of it before – The Tragedy Of The Commons.
The Tragedy of the Commons was first described by economist W.F. Lloyd in 1833. He wrote about cattle grazing on the grass of the town common. This is land not owned by anyone, so is 'common' to all and all can graze their animals upon it. The tragedy of the commons is an economic problem in which every individual tries to reap the greatest benefit from a given resource.
The theory says as time goes on, one farmer decides that he can have fatter cattle (and therefore they will sell for more money) if he lets his graze for longer than is commonly used. As time goes on, more and more farmers see that the first farmer is getting richer than they are and so decide to let their cattle graze longer too. Because there are more cattle grazing for longer periods of time, the land becomes less able to support any grazing at all since the grass doesn't get any time to grow back. Eventually, the common becomes a barren plot of land that nothing can graze on. What was once a resource that supported all farmers at a reasonable level has become depleted and unusable.
The theory states that individuals pursuing their own self-interests will deplete a shared resource if they benefit quickly and directly and the negative effects are shared by a group. To put it another way, it provides an opportunity to benefit themselves while spreading out the negative effects across a larger population.
How does this relate to Steemit?
The reward pool motivates each individual to take as much as they can for themselves. Meanwhile, everyone else has less of the reward pool to go around.
Also, the reward pool doesn't get smaller the next day because someone took 'too much,' but something negatives DOES happen. If people feel they aren't being adequately rewarded for what they do, they will have no reason to stay (or to join).
Without the demand for STEEM that is created by the feeling that one can have a just reward on Steemit for what they are doing, the price of STEEM will fall.
Now how does a person decide what is a just reward? Well, they simply look to see what others are receiving for their work here. This is fine as long as the majority of people feel that the reward provided matches the usefulness or quality of the post.
Nobody feels angry if a high-quality post is rewarded at a level that matches. This ability to provide a quality post and receive a quality reward is what makes Steemit users strive to create great content. Great content will drive new people to the site and some will join up and become the newest members of a thriving and growing community.
But if they decide that other people are not providing a post of sufficient quality for the reward given, they will become disenchanted by the system.
Disenchantment leads to less retention, less interactions, and less new users. All that leads to a lower price of STEEM which hurts EVERYONE.
Taking additional rewards in the short-term isn't optimal for anyone in the long-term.
What To Do?
Right now this vast majority of this power to see Steemit grow or decline rests with those who have the most power, the whales.
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
But all of us bear some responsibility.
We can do what we wish with our power, one way leads to the long-term success of Steemit and great riches from the increasing price of STEEM.
The other leads to some mediocre amount of short-term riches and the eventual insignificance of Steemit. I mean myspace.com is still around, but who cares?
But I know that humanity can come together to do great things. We can all come together and agree to not chase short-term personal gain, but instead focus on the long-term benefits that a thriving Steemit platform will offer to ALL of us. That means to only upvote content of quality and to a level that is within reason. To seek out those users that are creating the best content and upvote them regardless of how much curation reward you think you will get.
Or we can all just succumb and “do what everyone is doing” and only upvote posts that always earn well regardless of the content, our friends shitposts, or own one sentence comments 20X per day.
The choice, as always, remains our own. We will all reap what the community decides to sow.
P.S. I do have some ideas which, if pursued, can reduce this bad actor activity if anyone wants to hear them.
This is definitely a well written article. Being a newbie on Steemit, this has pointed me to the problems AND the solutions to the problems that we Steemians have. I especially like your use of story and quotes. This grabbed my attention and helped me understand the problem. I will be using this style of writing as well.
Oh thank you, Steemit is pioneering the future of how we use social media on the internet and so there are surely ways to improve and people that will take advantage until we come up with solutions.
So if you keep your eyes open, maybe you will think up solutions to any of the negative aspects here. If not, I welcome you to contribute to the positive parts of Steemit so as to drown out the bad actors.
I resteemed your post to get some people I know to read it. I've always been frustrated at society because of the wasted potential that's so evident to me. Working for your own benefit shouldn't mean benefiting from others but, rather, with others.
I find nothing wrong with profiting more than others; sometimes, you're just better at something or know how to make it more efficient. Maybe you're just lucky. But one has to constantly remember a simple truth: We cannot exist alone.
To me, this means that, while I could profit faster by feeding on others, we'll all go farther if we all work together to plant and harvest. Maybe being all me would get me from A to B faster, but cooperation lets us discover C.
Thanks for reminding me of The Tragedy of the Commons. It's a great tool for explaining this concept but I always forget how it goes!
Thank you so much for the resteem.
Truly if we all work together here on Steemit we will be able to increase the size of the pie instead of trying to grab more than you deserve from everyone.
This is all true but unfortunately we don't have people who think much about a better tomorrow. They exploit the rewards pool by upvoting their own content, posting 15 times a day and what not.
I have seen so many people not engaging in conversations on their own posts too. Curation is bread and butter of minnows. If people don't even respond to comments on their own posts, forget about up-voting their comments.
I hope everyone works towards a better tomorrow than a one day royal meal.
You're right, I personally try to always answer, and when I do not, it's because I agree with the comment and I feel there is nothing more to add, in that case I always leave a upvote, but there are people who never respond to the comments they make on its content.
Comments are the best thing a minnow can do at the start.
I try hard to respond to all comments and to check out what they have been posting lately.
I know. I have got responses on all of my comments on ur posts. I follow people who engage in discussions when they are really worth.
Following your posts I got a new topic to write here on steemit. Before that I used to do crypto crypto all the way.
Check my latest post. Might interest u.
i personnaly feel confused about steemit. Sometimes i can write great content and then have 1 steem dollar but some other times i can just write simply or just take a simple video and get reward. just confused.
Yesterday, i satdown for 3 hours trying to write some strategic plans for promo steem, but couldn't get many upvote. moreover if i got to the field and start promoting steemit, i do get rewards.
Furthermore, if i write any other thing not related to steemit, then it's worse caue i will just have stem cents. still confused.
After sensitizing my friends to join steemit, i feel like may be i don't have sufficient knowledge to motivate them on posting great content.
This is just some of my small issues on steemit.
Steemit and crypto posts have historically done well here. Not usually something I talk about in mine though. I like too many things.
I know it is hard, but you just have to continue to build upon your successes. Rewards will often be volatile.
yeah...true...some more efforts are needed
Excellent post @getonthetrain :) I was talking a little bit similar in a Post I did yesterday. And got some dialogue and activity going.
In it, I was talking about the person who introduced me to Steemit( @contentking). And how he had an excellent post about a ship that sank in the Great Lakes. Just really well done and he put a half day in creating this blog post. And hey was rewarded with a big whooping $2 and change for his troubles :(
I compared his case to another well know Steemian with a very high Rep and how he posted a blog post that was a Movie Review. It was good but $450+ good ?? Geesh.
Then I see where this certain "cat" who is a Steemian makes a Comment with a Meme "Congratulating" the Poster for using a bad Bot and then penalizes him...then goes on to self upvote himself and received over $100 on that Comment.
Is this insanity or what ??
I think we need to call it out whenever we see it. Be respectful about it. But hopefully these people will rethink about their Actions and the affect it has on our Community.
Also, I encourage the smaller Steemians to take "oaths" that they will NOT follow in the footsteps of this Greed when they become Dolphins and maybe Whales. I know sometimes money can fog your perception.
But I know for myself I am just going to hold myself to that and NOT do what some of these greedy people are doing on here. No matter what. And I take that very serious !!
Again thanks for this great post
P.S. Like you said and I said too...we are losing good writers/bloggers because of this greed and "self interest" . I don't think @contentking will be back.
Oh, I know @contentking from way back. We joined about the same time and when there wasn't a large active community. Shame that he has decided to give up.
But yeah, you can imagine the frustration of thousands of great content writers trying to get noticed and other people posting crap and making large sums.
This is an excellent post! And the tragedy of the commons will become the tragedy of Steemit, if there aren't more conscious Steemians such as yourself.
I think Steemit is still a relatively small community and this is a tragedy that can definitely be avoided at this size; but if it continues to grow, TeamSteem would have to change the structure.
Where money or crypto is involved, subjectivity is delegated to a back row seat.
Seems so
Excellent, I totally agree, I think part of the problem many times, are the automatic votes, I only vote content that I read first and that I liked, however, many do not vote the content, but by curation, which I consider very strange, because the margins of gain per curation are very low.
Yeah, curation rewards are very low even for me. Not that I go out there trying to get the most out of them, but to support those that do good work and are in my sphere.
I also manually vote every vote I have ever done.
It would be radical, but i would remove the "like your own post" feature... It would change steemit in a good way!
Not really. Everybody will start having two accounts then.
Yep, you are right :)
Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God :D Great share @getonthetrain
