Steemit Age Demographic and Gender Evolution and the North America vs Europe comparison

in #steemit9 years ago (edited)

Steemit is showing some clear trends with regards to age and gender of regulars.

The 11th May is the time we have demographic statistic appearing from Google Analytics.

Gender Age demographics and Gender Distribution graphs

At that time we see that almost 30% of site visitors are 18 to 24 year olds but none of them stick around. Also interesting is that almost 19% of site visitors are female but none stick around.

Remainder of May

Things are looking a lot more balanced from an age distribution perspective; we even have representation from the 55-64 year olds and the 65+ age category.

Number of female visitors has dropped to 12.3% for the month with only 4.5% becoming regular visitors.

25-34 category remains even for new users vs returning users
18-24 year olds stilldrop off drastically
Retention of returning visitors is greatest among 45-54 and 35-44 year old's respectively

June

Age distribution is still balanced

Number of female visitors has increased by 1% for the month with 2.5% more becoming regular visitors (7.9%).

Most categories remain even for new users vs returning users
18-24 year olds stilldrop off by about half
Retention of returning visitors is now greatest among 35-44 year olds.

Europe vs North America growth Comparisons

As promised: I removed South America from the equation and now the race between North America and Europe is even closer. Europe is now consistently above North America and the exponential curve (upper dashed line) is forecasting stronger growth for Europe based on past growth

Europe vs North America minus Eastern Europe and Russia

The picture is a little different if we remove Eastern Europe and Russia from the equation but the forecast curve (lower dashed line) is still showing stronger growth for Europe.

"18-24 year olds stilldrop off by about half" Sad to see this. As one who is part of that category, wish we can spend more time on intellectual discussions than hip "frivolities". Any signs this is changing soon?

We get a lot of misdirected hits from music sites, that probably skews the figures more drastically for that age group. Since they don't find what they were originally looking for.

Why? I don't fall in that demographic but I'll up vote a funny cat video.

I don't wanna see just intellectual shit brought forth on this site I wanna see everything brought forth on this site. So what if 18-24 year olds are attracted to stupidity (for the most part) it is what it is, let's provide some stupid yet attractive content for them and watch steemit thrive. Intellectual conversations aren't worth anything if they don't draw traffic (obviously there's value in the information but I'm speaking in Internet terms) so a funny meme could easily be worth more then a well written article in Internet land.

Don't get me wrong I'm 100% pro knowledge, self growth, progression, all that shit, but I also don't wanna limit this site either. I up vote everything I enjoy be it gaming, law, politics, crypto's, funny shit, cute animals, if I enjoy it I up vote it. That's how I believe we can reach a billion users. Additonallh that's how, if we reach a billion users we now have 1/7th of the population globally using crypto's, think of the potential 😍 And I'm gushing lol.

I agree. I'm assuming that the drop might be cos majority of posts here are intellectual. Of course, as steemit user base grows, there would be variety in posts that reach the hot/trending homepage. I love funny videos too. ;)

That's exactly what I'm thinking too, right now steemit is filled with crypto enthusiasts which seem to be relatively forward thinking, intelligent people.

As the user base changed and evolves and we see a wider variation of users and the content will also change. We'll still have all the intellectual informative information, but it will be accompanied with a ton of other topics as well catering to a variety of different audiences.

A small reminder that Eastern Europe is also Europe :). So I don't see the point to keep it out of the equation for Europe.
