I think steemit has a huge potential by a number of factors:

• Decentralization - Community driven decision making rather than a few power that be, this will keep this place politically/religiously neutral.
• Rewards - Never before, have posting been so richly rewarded. The rewards encourage people to post, whereas on the other platforms, posting simply enrich the shareholders (eg: Mark Z.)
• Long Term Development - The whole concepts of Steem Power encourages long-term "stickiness" to the platform, the fact that these steem power are locked and only redeemable over 2 years encourages people to stay and stick with the platform.
