“Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” Proverbs 16 vs 18

Pride is a very harmful tool for the destruction of the glorious days ahead, pride is one of those sins that leads to so many other sins before leaving us stranded on the path of “had I know” if not dealt with appropriately.

“Pride will always be the longest distance between two people” C.S Lewis.

Of course anyone can say boldly to himself I don’t have pride because, I work tirelessly at work, I give the fattest offering in my church, I render assistance to almost everyone in the community where I live, I respect everyone…., I do this, I do that. Doing something good is lovely but, the Motive or intention behind the doing tells greatly about us.
According to Merriam-Webster “pride is a feeling that you are more important or better than others”.
You think too much of yourself, maybe you are good at something and others are not so good at it and then you begin to raise shoulders high forgetting there may be things you don’t have a clue at and the next man you have been feeling superior to may be your savior in hard times, everybody has a purpose in life for God the creator is never a mistake Father.

I lack the intelligence to comprehend the teachings of the mathematics teacher.
To say the fact, I was good in other subjects, but I found mathematics rather complex.
I remember clearly in class when we were taught that "5 minus 6" was answerable with “it cannot” of course, this made a lot of sense to me. Few years later my new mathematics teacher came up to say "5 minus 6" is now equal “minus 3”. Funny it sounded to my hearing, having grown with the consciousness of “it cannot” now I had to accept the possibility of subtracting a higher number from a lesser one.
By the time I properly understood how to arrive at a negative answer which in fact was a major challenge for me, the teacher was speedy as to drop another mystery. This time, he introduced to us adding and subtracting alphabets from numbers. This was all strange to me.
So, one day, he gave us a class-work which centered on subtracting “8” from “p” attempting this question got me genuinely confused. Meanwhile, other pupils were not just answering this question, their answers were also said to be correct. I observed they had rough sheets on which they did the solving before arriving at the answer, in order not to be left out, I did what I thought was the smart thing, I decided to get my own rough sheet and wrote clearly the alphabets A to Z, then I numbered them respectively. I simply replaced the alphabet in the question with the corresponding number, so I changed “p minus 8” to “26 minus 8” I felt like a genius after propounding this formula, this feelings however did not last long, it ended when the teacher walked to my desk and took a look at my work, instead of commending me, he immediately gave me a french kiss with his large hand.

It kept going on, weekly new topics was introduced and I am left out long ago this made me dislike the mathematics teacher and the subject inclusive with the teacher.
Actually it wasn’t my inability to solve the equation that attracted the French kiss to me, but it was my pride. Knowing full well I am boss of my own, made me totally forgot I wasn’t good in mathematics, and it affected me as I disliked the man and the subject as a result of pride.

To crown it all I became very happy when I discovered my pride was killing me slowly, I had no option than to swallow my own pride as I met my classmate who has been my object of ridicule, thinking he will never be like me, but actually, he put me through. Since then, I have learnt never to underrate someone I do not know nor known and also never to let my pride get the best of me.

Sort:

Thank you appreciator.

A great subject to bring attention to. Pride arises and complicates the simplest conversations so that it becomes an argument. Awareness of these issues is so important in our interactions with each other, as truly everyone has their own special uniqueness.

Yes!! That's true, Thank you.

Pride always comes before the fall. Nicely written and enjoyed reading.

Thank you, i am glad you did.
