EN. Probably each of you noticed that regrettable fact that having a large number of followers in itself is not the key to success, popularity, or the guarantor of high payments on the Steemit platform.
You can have hundreds or even thousands of followers, but get the same number of votes under the post as an average beginner who created just a few articles. Why? Because the people's motives for following on a platform where money is involved works differently than on an unpaid Facebook or Youtube.
There people subscribe, if they really are interested in your content and they want to receive updates, be aware of your news... They leave a "like" if they really like.
Here, on Steemit before becoming your subscriber, people look more at your wallet than on the list of posts. By subscribing to someone, most of us expect a return subscription, regardless of the similarity of interests, the type of content and its quality. Familiar situation, right? And now ask yourself, should all these people follow you back, if they are not interested in your content?

Small research
One of the recent articles from @abh12345 made me think about the nature of following and check in detail the list of my followers. A great tool [Steemspectacles](http://www.steemspectacles.com) helped me in this small research.
Since I have never played the Follow per Follow, and did not make contests, promising bonuses for my potential followers, my account statistics can be considered free of these factors influence.
To find a certain number of dead followers was predictable: people come, people go - like everywhere else. I know also all my active followers (people, engaging with my content), and I very appreciate their attention, but today it's not about them.
Some other figures caught my attention, Ghost Followers - active Steemians who didn't engage with you in the last 100 posts. If you have less than 100 articles created, it means - NEVER

You can make the assumption that most of them are newcomers who follow more experienced and powerful users, hoping for their attention and following back. Yes, I found lots of ghost subscribers with 15+/-SP. What can I say to these people? FpF is wrong strategy, it gives you absolutely nothing if you choose following random people with whom you do not have similar interests.
When you follow everyone, don't expect they all will make the same for you. Why? 500-1000 subscriptions can make the feed completely useless and unmanagable, so experienced users / curators are usually interested in a narrow circle of authors and a limited number of posts in their feed. However, this does not stop them from occasionally supporting people outside their circle.
But not only newcomers were found in this list of ghosts, there are more advanced users here. For example, it was a great surprise for me to see all these people in the list of my most influential subscribers.

What I cannot understand
Most of these famous people I saw engaging with my content only once during my 1 year of being here. I can even suppose it was random votes... but what make them follow someone without making any active doings afterwards? just because of politeness? big guys playing FpF?
For me, it's like buying a subscription to the swimming pool / gym, but do not visit it and just carry a ticket in your pocket every day. But in fact you do not really need it, it is annoying, it takes a place, it prevents you from finding in your pocket really necessary things... Why not just throw it away, since you're not going to use it?

Большинство из этих известных людей были замечены в моем блоге только раз за весь год моего пребывания здесь. Я даже могу предположить, что это были случайные голоса... но что заставляет их следить за кем-то, впоследствии не совершая никаких активных действий? просто из вежливости? серьезные ребята, играющие в ПзП?
Для меня это как купить абонемент в бассейн/спортзал, но не посещать его, а просто носить билет в кармане каждый день. Но на самом деле он вам не нужен, он раздражает, он занимает место, мешает вам в поиске действительно нужных вещей... Почему бы просто не выбросить его, раз уж вы не собираетесь им пользоваться?

Do you look at the user's posting history before subscribe him, or one randon catched interesting post is enough for you? Do you read the articles of all the authors you are subscribed on?

Yeah, I've got over 2000 followers… not sure where they all came from! The problem is, not many of them are actually engaged, so really it's just a number. It may even be partly because my username is high up in the alphabet, who knows. Either way, it's better to have less in those numbers and higher in the stats that really matter. It should of course all be based on quality content and who resonates the most, then it can all grow organically…

Отличная статья, Таня! Я уже давно задумывалась об этом и уменьшила количество тех на кого я была подписана, примерно на 200. Стало лучше и приятнее :) Кстати жаль, что тебя не было на Митапе в Ужгороде! Я ребятам рассказывала о тебе! Надеюсь, что когда @cranium будет организовывать следующий митап, ты тоже приедешь !
Я тоже надеюсь. Он же вроде из Киева? это намного ближе, можно и мотнуться на выходные. Рада, что у вас там все прошло весело и позитивно, судя по количеству постов о митапе, созданных всеми участниками:-))) смотрю, у всех куча эмоций, круто!
Я свою ленту еще несколько месяцев назад почистила, человек 100 удалила. Последним был surpassinggoogle, классный парень и посты у него толковые, но 20-30 репостов в день... К некоторым людям легче самому заходить на страничку и выбирать нужное.

I think we all (or at least majority) were there and at the very beginning it seems like a good idea to follow those big and influential accounts. Yes- in hope they will notice us, small fishes. After a while it all makes sense. It doesn't work like that here. Follow4follow is never gonna work here. Thousands of follower does not add popularity here or money on the post.
Personally I do not follow people if they post content that I am not interested in. I just don't see the point.. I will not comment on them, so what for? And I don't expect people follow me back just because I followed them, because of the same reason.
I like to go to my feed and see things that interest me.

You are right absolutely with everything. We both went the same way and came to the same conclusions:-)
It seems to me that each of us needs to check the list of our subscriptions, from time to time, and remove authors whose content is no longer interesting to us. Then there will be more chances to not miss what is really worthy of attention.
And those who do not read other people's posts, let them lose time and come to this truth themselves.

I try my utmost best to engage and even in my signature is a comment asking that should you have an opposing view please leave a comment but it is like you say. Most are on heere to make money.
I do not go onto facebook except for managing some pages that I have on there and scroll the posts here on Steemit for good content to learn and I have found some people posting very informative information but engagement seems to be lacking on this platform.
I think maybe it is because everyone has the thought of a quick buck in the back of their minds and opening and continuing with a conversation probably feels like a waste of time.
I will definitely take a look at steemspectacles and clean up my feed as far as possible.

Since Steemit is a social platform, I sincerely believe that communication and interaction with each other is something that should help it develop and move forward. Oh, and quality content of course:-)
And I'm glad that there are people who understand this. Sometimes there is really nothing to discuss if it's a post with just a beautiful photo? what's the point of writing a "good post", upvote will be enough to say it.
But if the author touches on an important topic, asks the readers' opinion, this means he is really interested. And if you have 1,500 readers, but only 5-10 of them sometimes vote for your posts or write comments, does this mean that all those of them who remain does not even read them? Then why did they become your subscribers? Maybe we all should review our own subscriptions...
This is a great post. It is not the number of followers that matters most. it is more important to have a few engaged followers instead of thousands of people who do not read our content. Thanks for sharing about SteemSpectacles. Glad to have another tool that helps me see things for how they really are.

A full room full of people who don't engage is basically an empty room anyway. I never knew about steem spectacles I feel like I need to prune my follower list as well. Hopefully in the future those dead accounts become active and focus on their particular niche and contribute.
I've been on Steemit for a while now, and yeah, that around 15-85% ghost/dead followers rule holds pretty consistently. A lot are spam accounts, many more are follow-for-follow types, and a few are people who've dropped out of using Steemit.
