STEEMIT______WASTE OF TIME??_______some key questions you need to be honest about!!

Be honest with yourself

  • So how much time have you already spent on Steemit?
  • Are you on Steemit for the "upvoted" "brilliant" content ? (I am placing "brilliant" in quotes simply because there are quite alot of CRAP content being upvoted. Really, are we still in an age where we need to upvote pictures of CATS?
  • Apparently Steemit is in beta version. Why are you spending your precious scares resource of time on a platform that isn't even in a working condition as "NOTIFICATIONS", that are non-existent, are core to the Steemit concept to work?
  • If you have a look at the "trending" list of posts, please give a reason why it is only the whales (high reputation) foks who are listed, with DOLLARS that have been earned. Strange, if Steemit was all about an upvoting process that classifies content as good or bad, why aren't new / low reputation steemian posts also in the "Trending" section. I have seen some very good contnt of such steemians, especially compared to some content posted by the high reputation steemians.

Believer of Steemit?

On the one hand I believe the Steemit concept can work if your hard earned followers can actually get notifications of your content. However, I have a feeling we will spend quite alot of time on Steemit, and after a while discover that our scarse resource of time has been wasted....which SHOULD be a very bitter pill to swallow.

Please convince fellow Steemians

So in answering the above questions, are there anyone who can convince me that Steemit is NOT a waste of time to upvote cat pictures or dinner plate shots??

These are common issues for new users... Yes, the Trending page is full of whales and a ton of people only upvote because they smell money. The rich get richer and the poor keep on dreaming.. It frustrated me to no end. I have since stopped playing that game, and instead started to completely ignore the Trending page. I don't upvote people on there, it's a waste of voting power.

Instead, I scroll through the New posts in the categories that I like, and see if I can connect with people there. Kind of like how I stumbled on this post of yours and am now replying to it. And you know what? It's actually made this whole experience a ton more fun. I have 300+ followers and it took a month and 800+ posts (mostly commenting) to get there. And it has been more rewarding monetarily too, because people will usually appreciate and enjoy the social interaction and the fact their post doesn't get drowned without views! I have been pleasantly surprised by 50 cent upvotes or more, unexpectedly, by simply engaging others.

But now that I've connected with a few people,I am starting to notice that my posts are getting seen too. While I make nowhere near the amount of money per post as any whale or dolphin, I'm kind of getting a kick out of the fact that some of my posts have indeed made a dollar or two. Long story short: Steemit takes about a month of dedicated friend-making and networking to get a foot in the door. But it does slowly seem to snowball into a bigger ball. My expected earnings for the next 7 days are twice as much as I earned the week before, and those are higher than the week before that.

So keep at it... forget about the money, just focus on making friends and getting followers! Once you show up in people's feeds and you write things that they like, you'll be getting more attention too!

I'll help you out by following you and upvoting your post. If you want, you can follow me too! I am trying to be an honest Steemian, so no spam or abuse from me. I blog mostly about crypto related things.

You know, i suscribe all words you said one by one. You are absolutely right and that sould be the spirit of steemit.
Not a get rich fast place.
Yes a community of people interacting becouse of common interests and sharing GOOD content.
I'll follow you both, i blog mostly about food and recipes, you can check my profile if you like.

Thanks! I'll follow you right back!! :)

Thanks for the comment.
FOLOWED.

Problem with your comment...the only problem...is that the FEDS section doesn't work unless you constently view it...so old school.

But thanks for the comment.

Some of us like animals, including myself. I'm quite happy to upvote pictures of people's cats if they include at least a little blurb about their cats. Posts that are just a cat meme with no additional text, not so much. As for dinner plates, if they include a recipe and it's an interesting home cooked meal, also awesome by me.

I don't consider Steemit a waste of time because I enjoy writing. I think anyone who came here solely for the purpose of trying to make a bunch of cash is going to get disillusioned pretty quickly. If that's what you're here for there are definitely much easier ways to make money.

Also, it's important to realise that even if you do consider Steemit something for making money, you're not going to make it overnight. Just as you wouldn't start making money overnight if you started your own blog or Youtube channel. Some people work years before the profit starts rolling in. And unfortunately, the same rules of crap content getting a tonne of money apply with those mediums as well, because once someone is big and can get the sponsorship they can dole out any old crap and people will lap it up. That's just how life is.

One thing I want to say is that you get out of it what you put in. You need to engage with others on their actual content as well as post your own. And no offense, but it seems like a lot of what you are doing is spamming your own post on other's people pages which is only going to piss them off. If you want to get in life, you have to be willing to give as well.

Thanks for your feedback
I simply want to get a feel for how people find the Steemit experience, and specifically the "reputaiton" side of it, which is after all the most important thing here.

I agree: "Different strokes for different folkes", but really, some really bad content gets upvoted simply because of dolphin & whale interactions, whilst the ones, like yourself who wants to add value, simply don't get the merrit it deserves.

From the comments this post got so far, most feel that Steemit has become a drag on their time.

Anyhow, take care :-)

The value of steem is subjective. If you look at it financially - it probably averages quite low. The same thing could have been said of youtube at its inception. Steem is not just a currency. It is a way of doing things. I have suggested that the local newspaper change its online content to the steem blockchain. Not only would it reward its viewership for reading their content but also create a revenue stream for themselves. Since it is on the blockchain, it may interest readership in other parts of the world. This would transform a newspaper from declining membership in its paper market and a non-starter in its online market to becoming a leader in the industry.
A second area that I find quite valuable is that it gives me an outlet to practice creating well reasoned out thoughts. On a daily basis the average person becomes more of a receiver of content (Netflix etc) but social media gives people an opportunity to create content. The curation of Facebook, Twitter etc is false - their is truer value on steem.

i've got some other issues with Steemit that i've compressed into a short article :

It's interesting to check also for the sake of discussion in comment section.

I have read your post just now. FOLLOWED!!

Yes, I too believe that popularity is what gets the posts upvoted, and not necessarily quality, as you also put it in your post.
FOLLOWED... :-) for what it is worth :-)

Thank you for reading. Steemit hardly can be used by common man as an only source of income. It get useful as a means to get entry into cryptos and an additional funds, however small, to invest in bitcoin for example. As a side - thing it's a great idea, unless some improvements will be made to Steemit. Let's hope so.

I have found it is a waste of time since it seems the wallets are consistently down. It's Monopoly money unless we can use STEEM and SBD as actual currency. Not sure if it is Steemit's fault or the fault of the exchanges, but as a user it is aggravating enough to not put my time and effort into building here. :(

Thanks for replying.
So are you planning to leave Steemit?

I agree. It's hard to stay positive and not feel like you're wasting your time on here, unfortunately. I go back and foreth about it.

Feel the same here. One should be careful of how you spent your 24 hours in a day.

I hate to say it, but I agree. When I first started steemit (2 months ago) I was thrilled at the thought of earning $200 per article but quickly realized only people with high reputation scores and lots of followers could generally earn those profts. I get it, but it's not fair at the same time. Steemit needs to fix that issue.

A small group of people are making money, not because their content is better than that of a newbie steemit user, but simply because they have a high reputation.

Steemit hasn't fully finalized yet. Honestly, if you make a good post, people will see it and upvote it. The best way to go about Steemit is to ask yourself "What can I do to earn a living on Steemit?" Look at @jwolf as an example. He's extremely proactive on this site - posting, commenting, upvoting and networking.

Thanks for the comment.
Don't you think that popularity get more upvotes than quality?

I have seen some real crappy trending posts, simply because of a huge fllower base & reputation.
I have seen some real good quality posts, without making a buck.

I think the idea of Steemit is good, but its implimentation benefits a few.

Yes popularity does and if you check out my latest post, I kind of go into it towards the end. The top steemit users didn't get to their position by doing nothing, they either joined when it was new and built a following or bought steem power.

Face it...we live in a world where the schemers will always find a way to beat the system or use it to their advantage...I admit I get overwhelmed by the number of posts I need to weed through on a given topic to find ones I may want to read...no doubt a better job could be done with presentation and the way things get voted...I also find the search engine lacking as I end up not being able to go back to the search pages that popped up each time I select one...frankly...I don't understand all the rules and don't have the patience or focus to figure them all out...but..that's okay......I still enjoy scanning through....writing every now and then...perhaps connecting with a few more fellow steemers and if a few dollars come my way...great...this isn't my full time job...I gave up thinking I could be a novelist years ago or that my ideas were any more unique than everyone else...hopefully it survives if not...I have no doubt some model like it will...

Thanks for taking the time to comment and for that I FOLLOW you.
This upvoting process doesn't ensure quality content, as is sold by Steemit advocates.
I don't believe it is worth my time anymore to browse through numerous posts before finding something of value, importance or skill.

SteemIt isn't "sold" as anything. It is just a platform where some people earn Steem from "Stake based voting" meaning the more stake you have the more your vote matters. There is no promise of quality content, no promise of earning, no agreed upon marketing plan. Anything you read that lead you to believe differently was just someone's opinion.
People use their stake in upvotes and downvotes however they choose, others watch and comment, but that is about all there is to it.
If it feels like a waste of time to you, move on. If it sounds like an opportunity, stay... How the game is played relies only on you and your stake.
Enjoy

So interesting.

Of course steemit is not perfect...is there any perfect thing in the world? Upgrades and adjustments have to be done, but is not steemits fault if something seems unfair, is people use what make It unfair.

Yes I definitely agree, but a my feeling is that a HUGE part of the fairness of Steemit concept, lies in its follower base that needs to be aware of new posts. As this doesn't work, Steemit concept doesn't work, except for those high reputation people who gets listed on the TRENDING section.

Thanks for your comment.
