My 1st week on Steemit--what I've learned so far

in #steemit7 years ago

First of all I'd like to say this has been a great first week for me. I went into this with a humble mindset that I probably won't make much my first week, month, etc. and it's served me well. My first few days I put up a few posts with just one picture and less than 100 words as that's what I'm used to doing with other social media platforms and they made a few bucks...and then I started following others, upvoting and commenting on posts and my posts' value went up significantly after that.

After seeing some of the content that does well (anything over $50 is great in my book) and stuff where the posted absolutely knocks it out of the park and gets $500 - 1000 from a post, I made a few mental notes and applied them to my own posts.

-Include multiple pictures or images
-Go into detail / more is generally better here as long as it's unique and well thought-out
-Post content from the heart
-Post about what you're passionate about
-Share knowledge you have that others might find useful
-Spend a couple of minutes thinking about what tags you should use
-Quality of a post >>> Quantity of posts (I do about 1 per day and I put 20 minutes to as much as 2 hours into my posts now)
-One upvote from a veteran can be worth more than 20-100 upvotes from newer people like myself

I quickly came to realize the huge earners have been here a long time and have spent countless hours crafting their content and building a following. Another lesson that was easily learned and I suspected from the start is YOU WON'T GET RICH OVERNIGHT and it takes a lot of effort to build even a modest following. If one approaches Steemit with the intent of having fun, making friends, and sharing interesting things about ones self and posts truly unique and / or interesting content that's their own personal experience / thoughts, they'll do well even if it takes some time.

A few no-no's and lessons that I've learned from reading content from more experienced people / whales / dolphins posting are as follows

-Use original content instead of just stealing something that someone else put online. I see some people like to repost stuff like snapshots of porn or whatever which is fine, BUT....I find that a real woman posting racy pics of herself is much more appealing to most (based on payout amounts I've seen) than some random porn shot (because it's real life). That's just my opinion though and please don't take offense to it.

-Don't ask outright for follows, upvotes, resteeming, etc. or engage in horse-trading of follows just for the sake of getting followers (advice from multiple experienced posters that I've read)

-Don't post every 5-10 minutes all day long as it jams people's feeds and they're likely to mute or unfollow you unless you're just on a roll with a bunch of amazing content

-Try to avoid being seen as a spammer...avoid cutting and pasting generic replies excessively and make your comments on people's posts unique each time you respond. Read the person's post and add your thoughts / how you identify with it in the comments. If you don't have anything nice to say just move on.

-Many of the more experienced steemians are annoyed by the use of bots...I'm neutral on this subject as I haven't explored it as much but other ppl's opinions matter, especially those who have been here awhile and have a good following / reputation

-Don't whale-hunt! From what I've read, the whales and dolphins of Steemit hate being pestered by people who are trying to take a shortcut and don't want to put in the work required to achieve their level of success. They spent a lot of time getting where they are and they expect the same of us newbies if we want to be successful

In conclusion, I've had a great first week that has exceeded my wildest expectation. I believe my trying to keep a humble mindset and going in with the intent of having fun / learning more so than getting rich quick has helped me be what I consider successful in my first week. I've had several posts exceed $30 which isn't much to some people but is very exciting to me. After day 2 I only had a few bucks accrued but after I was more actively engaged with people I started earning more and for that I'm extremely thankful. I had one post about a day trip my wife and I took that hit over $40 and it's my best earner yet and I truly enjoyed putting it together and seeing the finished product. Apparently others did too! (thank you all!)

I still have A LOT to learn and any comments from others about their early experience on this site are appreciated. I'd also like to hear any pet peeves which I may have missed in the no-no section of my post from more experienced people if they do come across this post and feel like adding their input.

Thank you to all my followers and everyone who's commented, upvoted, resteemed, etc. You've made this a wonderful experience and I am very thankful to those who've taken their precious time to view my content. This isn't the best pic of me but it's real...I'm sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee before I got to work smiling because I'm grateful to you all.

I hope this was informative and didn't offend anyone. Have a great day doing whatever it is that you do.

Just started this week too... Let's see how far we go... ;-)
btw: I don't think this offends anyone...

i just started too, it takes time like everything else so keep going and don't quit :)

Yep I've been spending an hour or two per day minimum learning my way around and of course adding to my blog. It's gonna take time but I think in several years I'll look back and think "wow that was worth sacrificing my time."

I collected my first payout yesterday and I was very excited.

congratz :)

I started about two weeks ..... good post...

Seems like there's a lot of us who started in June or July. I read somewhere that the user base has more than doubled just in a couple of months.

Even though we got in late relative to some others, in a few years we newbies could become very well off as steemit grows exponentially which I expect. Just a matter of time.

Great post, I am about to become one week old here at steemit and your post has given me a good idea on what to do. Thanks!

Excellent! I'm happy you found it informative. It seems there's a lot of us who have just joined the past 1-3 weeks and hopefully we can all manage to avoid annoying the crap out of the more established people on here lol. I know some are frustrated with all the new users but I think this influx is nothing compared to what we might see over the next year or two as more and more people hear about the social media site that pays for content....it just sounds so easy doesn't it!

I have been around a week and a half, and I share completely your recommendations. I am taking it very easy, following advice from several people I trust, and trying to read as much as possible to discover intersting blogs and follow them to try to engage conversation, which I see as the most important point at every social network.
My posting capabilities are smaller maybe than yours, I am not used to write everyday, but I would like to get used to it, and I see Steemit as a good incentive.
Speaking about bots, I have tried a couple of them and used minnowsupport from PAL, it is interesting to encourage maybe the new users that are putting interest to avoid them loosing the interest because their posts are not reaching the public. This is something that can happen when you are new and have no followers. But it is completely true that it is annoying entering into posts and only watching bots commenting, and people self-curating even comments...

Yes, I completely understand why a new person would want to try to use bots to earn more and get exposure. I have not really explored the use of them so much so that's why I didn't really have an opinion about them (though others have very strong opinions about bots).

Re: writing every day...it definitely takes discipline. I already sit at a computer station at work for 6-8 hours per day so it can be hard to come home and stare at my computer for an additional hour or two. However, I enjoy writing here and my teachers in school always told me I was good at it. I seem to have gotten this gift from my dad as he's a journalism major and has recently gotten into publishing his own books after he retired from corporate america. At work I design machinery, crunch numbers, and reply to countless emails so it's different than what I do here. Steemit gives you complete creative freedom and I've found myself actually enjoying writing as I'm not constrained to any particular boring subject as many of us have been when we went to school and were given specific books to read and then write about. I've never really blogged on a daily basis until now but I'm starting to really like it and see the fun in writing (which I always saw as a burden because most of the writing I've ever done was way back when I was in school or technical reports done for college classes and then later in life reports for work).

I can be long-winded though. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience and I wish you the best of luck on here!

Great post John, looks like this post will break your previous record, well done. I am new to steem as well, just over 13 days or so. The problem I noticed from the beginning was that the reputation score barely moves. I was posting original articles and pictures. but for the first 10 days my reputation score stayed on 25... I then decide to try a bot to see if this would help. The Steem voter did not work for me, I think they were in the process of updating it or merging with steembooster. Then I found the Randowhale and for 2 steems it would give you a random vote of anywhere between 1% -50%, so I thought I'd give it a try. it works to some degree, my current reputation score is at 36 after using this bot for a few days. I figure that I can invest at least 100 steem to get my reputation up as far as I can so that my post do not fall of the front page after 10 seconds... well good luck to our class of June and July 2017. It would be nice if we could catch up in 6 months or so to see how everyone progressed?
Just a thought.. take care good post again... I'll give you an upvote ,,, but mine are not worth very much...maybe that will be different in 6 months

I like toast 🍞

Absolutely! I'll follow you and let's reevaluate our status in six months or so! That's a great idea. Thanks for the upvote as I appreciate any upvote regardless of the payout that results from it. Best of luck to you and I'll check out your blog this evening after I take care of some things offline...

Hey man. Appreciate the post. I'm brand new here too. Seems like you've had a good bit of success for just starting out. I understand this isn't a get rich quick thing and patience is the virtue, but I've been following these tips and can't seem to break the dollar mark for any posts yet lol. Gonna keep plugging away and connecting with the community regardless! Curious if you or anyone reading this has any other insight.

For a minnow like me, this post was quite helpful. Thanks a lot for this insight. I'm trying to be as original as I can. It's my second day here and I'm about to come up with my second post. My niche is positivity, growth and mindfulness. Don't know if many people will be into that but I'm gonna stick to what I know better and what I truly believe in.

Great information. I am a newbie to the community also. I just started yesterday. Thank-you for sharing!
