Steemit Payment/reward system confusion!

I don't want to say this system is broken the way it is but it's really not normal or maybe i just can't seem to understand how it works!

How can someone who is actually writing his or her content end up with next to nothing with as much upvotes as some random comments getting around 5 votes and ending up with 500$ lol.

Is this related to how many steem power you hold? I mean people buying steem and stacking them in here converting them in steem power and this results in every upvote to equal a ridiculously high amount of SD?

3 days ago Reddit CEO visited coinbase office to discuss some unknown affairs yet and this could really well be related to steemit creating some big buzz!

Aniway I already love this community but I just don't understand yet how these random comments are getting this much SD compared to well written posts ( im not referring to me actually, I am referring to anyone in this community that is working hard to create some interesting content)

Hope to have a good answer to satisfy my lack of knowledge!
