Posted a while ago, but still fully relevant and easy to get you started :)
I'm mining right now. how do i know i hit a block? i'm getting these redundant messages:
2470736ms th_a application.cpp:422 handle_block ] Syncing Blockchain --- Got block: #300000 time: 2016-04-04T04:16:06
2477608ms th_a application.cpp:422 handle_block ] Syncing Blockchain --- Got block: #310000 time: 2016-04-04T12:50:39

You are still downloading the blockchain data, after that the actual mining will start.
You should see a note that you have mined a POW on steemd.com, and then you get included in the miner-witness queue to sign a block and get the reward. Unfortunately when that happens is harder to track as there are no notifications, you will see +1 SP in your wallet in an hour or two after you get a note on mining a POW.
