Diary of a Broken Soul
Though you chase me with a knife,
I will restrain not your thrust,
For I have been cut deeper by your betrayal,
And I think I will die not anymore
For your act dropped me in Hades.
Now Let Me Analyse the Poem
The Poem you just read is one inspired by true events and real life situation, but as the poet, I'll try as much as possible to analyse without emotions and be as objective as possible.
- The Poem is introduced with a subordinate clause, which translates that the next line should be connected to it. The poem opens with an imagery, the image of someone being attacked with a knife. We all know when someone is being attacked or is going to be harmed, the reasonable thing to do is to run. The persona rather follows with a twist which showe frustration and disappointment. He won't restrain, neither will he resist and the thrust there can be likened to the effect of the disappointment and betrayal. The first two line shows us that the poem is one of heartbreak. As a matter of fact, the title already depicts that. So the persona addresses an absent individual like she is present, this shows apostrophe which is the address of a person or object as if he/she is present.
- Subsequent Lines further throws light on the first two lines. Line 3 tells us why the persona will not restrain the thrust of the knife. The persona has gotten used to being disappointed, being dumped, cheated on, and so on and he feels the worse has already happened to him.
- Line 4 can be said to be an exaggeration and it can be connotively explained as the persona being dead already and feels death can no longer harm him. He might not be dead physically but feels he's been killed several times while in love. He does not think he'll have emotional feelings for anyone anymore. That is why line 5 follows with "For your act dropped me in Hades." He feels he has gotten to the peak of emotional trauma and any other thing will only tickle his fancy. I know so many people will relate to this poem, as finding the perfect Person has proven difficult.
- The Poem is one of 5 lines, and can be read in one stretch as a single sentence. Figurative expressions employed are hyperbole, imagery, irony. The poem is Rendered in the first person narrative and it follows the title, Scribbles of a Broken Soul.
I will try to analyse poems from other authors too, as this is a piece written by me @chidijohn7.
