What does flagging do exactly?

in #steemit8 years ago

I had a post doing really well until I got a flag from the asshole account.

I can't find any definitive info on flagging, and the articles returned by Google are over 6 months old.

So how does it work exactly? Did that one flag destroy my post's chances, or was it just a coincidence?

thank you @catharcissism i was wondering about the flag until i saw your post. It was really helpful

@catharcissism I re-steemed your post...and upvoted and flagged that comment...

Thanks @elewarne, that's lovely of you

A flag is simply a "downvote", they are one in the same. The downvote shows up next to the post as a "flag" basically keeping count of all the downvotes on that post. A downvote counters an upvote with the same SP (and voted at the same percentage). These downvotes (flags) by asshole and blacklist are being done at 1% voting strength and the accounts themselves have very little SP. Which means these downvotes (flags) will have basically no effect on a post in terms of the rewards it makes. It is annoying yes, but really shouldn't effect anything. The ironic part is that if everyone gets flagged, in essence, no one gets flagged... not sure what their goal is here?

Thanks, that was comprehensive.

Any way to deal with those accounts?Maybe they're trying to see how much they can fuck with the system.

Also: where do you get this info, so I don't have to ask in the future?

That is a good question! Most of the basic info about the site comes from the whitepaper, which is linked in the drop-down menu in the upper right side of your screen (3rd option down). However, much of that info has since changed. The best thing to do is follow the steemitblog account (https://steemit.com/@steemitblog) which posts updates to the site from time to time.

Nice. Thank you!

I am not the one wh flagged you, but I can say that profanity in your headline does not help your cause. I,as many others do not appreciate or see the need for profanity in a post. If I see it in a headline, I go no further. Which is a shame, because I do believe there could be a good message that is clouded by profanity or even hate speech

I don't use profanity in my headlines?

Did you mean the use of @$$hole? (Not sure how to convey it, I don't mean offense). That's the actual name of the account flagging everyone.

As for profanity in my writing... Well that's used to convey something specific, and it's part of who I am. I try not to be to careless with it.

While I agree to some extent, that some profanity best fits the the description of the message you are trying to convey, it may not be appropriate. We've gone thousands of years describing our feelings and putting out our message without profanity. Now it's the only way to communicate? I'm just saying, if you want more people to read your post, you may want to hold off on the profanity in the headlines.

Again, I don't use profanity in my headlines. I'm a bit more clever than that.

However I'll point out that profanity has been around long before jesus.

But I do agree, gratuitous use of profanity diminishes its meaning and effect. As with most salt, it's best to use in moderation.

The word @$$hole is profanity.

Ahhhh. That's in the lede if I'm being pedantic. Still, I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

My Bad. I meant the lead, as well as the headline.

@clarkwayne...and all the other names you use...Asshole leave this site...
