Intermittent fasting (IF) is an umbrella term for various diets that cycle between a period of fasting and non-fasting during a defined period. Intermittent fasting can also be used with calorie restriction for weight loss. I orginally got the idea from Charles Fuchs aka @stackin. His original post from two months ago is below.

Some people (and I put myself in this category) may use intermittent fasting to diminish caloric intake and lose weight. I started this method about a month ago along with using a weight-loss app called Lose-It. So not only am I only eating at certain times of the day but also staying at less than 2100 calories per day.

There are multiple ways to complete this program. Intermittent fasting protocols can be grouped into 2 categories: whole-day fasting and time-restricted feeding (TRF).

Whole-day fasting involves regular one-day fasts. The strictest form would be Alternate-day fasting (ADF). I knew that this form of the program would give me migraines along with me becoming very grumpy so I decided to use the time-restricted feeding (TRF) method instead.

This fasting technique only has an individual eating during a certain number of hours each day. A common form of TRF involves fasting for 16 hours each day and only eating during the remaining 8 hours, typically on the same schedule each day. I do a slight variation on this theme in which the eight hours that I am able to consume food are in two four hour blocks. I eat from 8am-noon and then again from 4pm-8pm.

Recommendations vary on what can be consumed during the fasting periods. I personally eat what I want because I won't stick with the program if I feel deprived.

I'm pleased with the results so far and I've been rarely hungry so I think that this weight-loss method will work for me.
