Another DDoS Attack On Steemit? Will It Get Worse?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

There's been a lot of speculation around the recent onslaught of Denial Of Service attacks on Steemit.Com . They've continually been occurring today and yesterday (or, are arguably all part of one prolonged attack). We've been informed that it is not affecting the blockchain and this has been shown by the fact that other sites that utilize the Steem Blockchain are not having issues. That said, some are excited that this is happening and others are fearful. The excited see this as a rite of passage, pointing to the exponential growth of Steemit.Com as a platform and the fact that the larger we get, the more fearful competitors get and the larger a target we put on our backs. Some even think that Mark Zuckerberg, making the assertion that he is afraid that Steemit will take away Facebook's Steam.

Others are afraid, fearing the real dangers that can come when a site is maliciously, continuously attacked in a multi-pronged way. I think the biggest fear on people's minds are security. Millions and millions of dollars are watched over by Steemit and if private keys were ever compromised, then the whole platform would be in an immediate, critical risk. I think the most important thing is that we are provided updates by the Steemit team on a regular basis and that there is an open, honest communication between the users and creators so that any concerns that can be brought to light are brought to light (obviously, don't imply any security holes if any are known, as you would just be enabling attackers).

ARE YOU ONE OF THE AFRAID OR ONE OF THE EXCITED? IS THIS A SIGN OF DANGER OR A SIGN OF SUCCESS? WILL IT GET WORSE OR IS IT ALL UP FROM HERE? COMMENT BELOW AND LET ME KNOW! :)

biddle, in my case this is in fact a VERY EXCITING THING! I can see these as a coming to age! Steemit.com it´s in a maturity journey right now, and nothing can stop it!, the outcome of this proces will be a stronger platform that anyone will trust in the years to come!

Yeah, I'm definitely leaning toward it just being a rite of passage for what will be a staple of the industry (and essentially already IS a staple of the industry)! :) Internet Boxing to toughen the site up.

For now I'm neither excited or afraid, mostly annoyed I would say ^^

I HEAR THAT! haha

Hey Nick,
How's the heat down there?

haha not bad, Andrew. but no relation, thankfully :p ; I hope that the 'Biddle' name can be synonymous with wealth, generosity, AND kindness one day in the near future! :)

I'm the Biddle for the new age, Nathaniel Biddle! haha :D

Then I wouldn't be riding on those coattails. Good luck with the turn around!

but the picture will get the conspiracy theorists talking, amirite? :) All press is good press. lol

How many can connect the dots?

Good question. I imagine there are many people who don't even know who Nicholas Biddle was!

Or who is controlling the money supply right now.

AMEN to that. Believe me, it is a LOT MORE COMPLICATED than people think, especially those who believe that Crypto/The Blockchain will just magically take the power out of the hands of the elite. There are scenarios where it will do that, but there are also SOME scenarios where it could even give them more power.

But that is definitely THE question. :)

Annoyed, indeed! Don't know what it means, guess steemit is taking flak?

I'm finding it a little annoying, because it is change. I'm a creature of habit and I like to follow my routine.

I'm not completed ruled by my habits though, so I'm soldiering on through busy.org. This is definitely a good thing for busy.org's revenue stream.

I personally see this as a sign of success and a push for legitimacy. Facebook is massive, but it likely faced similar problems before it gained its power. For now, steemit has a lot to prove, especially because of the actual money maintained on the platform. With the current transparency and updating, these attacks could solidify steemit and the steem blockchain as a pillar for decentralized media because they will push for improvement. If these attacks never succeed, they can only help, hopefully.

Well Said! :)

Don't forget when Steemit. com is unavailable you can always go to https://busy.org ;-)

And of course, as long as there are people like my friend @evildido who host Steemit instances on independent servers and other applications continue to run, there is no problem for me. If Facebook is the victim of a successful Ddos attack, I think they don't have a lot of solutions to counter this while we Steemians have a lot of third-party applications that allow us to use Steemit. So Keep calm and buy Steem :-D

I agree with @stoodkev. I'm just annoyed.

My opinion is there are people out there who do not what us to be talking about certain world events (ie Las Vegas and Catalonia) on a platform that they cannot control or censor, and that is who is behind these attacks.

My only concern now is the same concern I had yesterday, the day before and in May when I signed up. It is what I call the "Rockefeller effect" where wealth buys power and destroys competition. A "pod" or even a single whale could destroy honest discourse by voting down and therefore stifling dissent or unpopular opinions.

I dont have a technical background so I m not sure what to make of this.
Can this be solved by scaling ?

Yeah, they could put more server power, infrastructure, and throw money at the problem for sure and hopefully they're doing some of that. I think it is just one piece of what needs to happen though. But absolutely, scaling more than they have already done will help. :)

Thank you for explaining ;=)

If it's worth this much attention, Steemit is on the right track.

Agreed! If this is due to the popularity, it is a good sign of success! :) If it isn't for that reason, maybe alarms should be raised though, which is something to also consider. :)

We need more info it seems before we can confirm or decline 😃

I hope Dan Larimer's excellent 10-100k transactions/second blockchains can outcompete Bitcoin. (Even though 10k+ bitcoin loyalists are on a subreddit for bitcoin or bitcoinCash lovers... destroying centralisation as well as possible is for the better... to stop the UK and US central banks from owning the world... they want the best world for themselves/their harem/their kids not us)... but we've outsmarted them by creating a technology that gives the rest of the world an economic incentive for decentralised wealth and power (better known in the US as liberty - it's the same thing)
