Nostalgia is a great motivator.

It's in the year of 2001 the computer science student Ludvig Strigeus a enthusiast of adventure video games was trying to create his own graphic adventure game, so in an attempt to achieve this, Ludde began to investigate the internal workings of the SCUMM a game engine developed at Lucasfilm Games or LucasArts as we know it today , in order to borrow ideas from it, but during this stage an idea hit in Ludde's mind, that of creating an interpreter able to run the game Monkey Island 2 (MI2), so he started using a disassembler and working on his idea.

Strigeus join force with Vincent Hamm that at that time was working on an emulator of SCUMM, it's initial version was 0.0.1, which began to be distributed among the community of fans of graphic adventures as well , specifically among those who were developers. It contained a very limited functionality but served as inspiration for a lot people to join the project, they releasing its first public version on January 13, 2002, and its name was ScummVM 0.1.0. This version was very functional and had basic support for the games until version number 7 of the Scumm LucasArts original games.

Nowadays, ScummVM has become an attempt to write an interpreter of the LucasArts Scumm in a free and portable program that allows you to play the usual graphic adventures such as Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam and Max and any other game based on Scumm either from LucasArts or from any other developer in various operating systems or multi platforms and most of the languages in which they were released maintaining the original fidelity of the title. So if you ever enjoy this genre, and I recommend that you give it a chance, it is one of the best there is, you will have to resort to SCUMMVM.
