Steemit and Other Crypto-Social Venues as Commercial Outlets for ArtistssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #steemit6 years ago

Part of my reason for creating this account in the first place was to explore the possibility of using this blockchain-based "alternative-currency" venue as a potential new outlet as an artist.

When I say "outlet," I mean another sales venue where the transaction is actually conducted completely independently of fiat currencies.

What's Already Here?

Maybe I am ahead of my time here, because it feels like many are excited about the potential of cryptocurrencies, and yet very few functional applications exist.

Steemit/Steem is attractive because there already is a substantial built-in user base here. Specifically, it's a user base materially made up of regular folks, rather than just the typical "blockchainiac" types that tend to be drawn to these projects.

Many of these "regular folks" also happen to be artists and creatives, themselves. Suggesting that I may not be alone in coming forward with this harebrained idea.

The question is, how do we get from the predominant current paradigm of this... technology... being mostly seen as a "high risk investment," to something where we are actually taking the promise of "a CURRENCY" and creating a viable form of payment?

Initiatives...

Frankly, there's not a whole helluva lot available in the current Steem ecosystem.

@steemshop was an early initiative here... it got started, fizzled, sort of got started again, fizzled again.

@steembay was — and remains — the brainchild of @schererf and @pollux.one and has been around for a while, but goes almost unnoticed... in spite of the addition of a separate app for trading @steemmonsters cards.

Most recent entry into this arena is @dcommerce, which started showing some signs of life as it arose out of the @dstors fiasco... but there seems to have been no activity there for about a month.

Of course, there's nothing to prevent any one person or artist from simply making a post that states "here's one of my things, it's for sale!" which brings us to the point of...

The Pervasive "Decentralization Issue"

The premise with Steem and other blockchain-based initiatives always comes back to the great attachment to the "Holy Savior of Decentralization."

So many projects seem to run on this utter distrust of anything "centralized." Which might also explain how come none of these attempts at creating commerce ever seem to go anywhere: Someone Has To Be In Charge.

Seems to be a sticking point, but can we really allow it to be?

The thing is, we don't live in a world where everyone is an independent-minded self-starter.

To use a metaphor I think most people might relate to, consider the simple task of buying fresh locally sourced food, and farmers markets.

We may really love the idea of buying our produce and goods from local growers (aka "decentralization") rather than the corporate farms serving grocery stores, but in the real world it's just not viable for us to drive to one farm for potatoes, another for eggs, another for handmade candles and yet another for lettuce and tomatoes.

Enter The Farmer's Market. Much like a commercial selling utility, a farmer's market gathers the independents in a single location for convenience, and simply offers a framework for trade.

That's all we're really looking at, here. And looking for.

Mainstreaming: Why This Is Good for us ALL

Some skeptics might say we don't need something like this... but I disagree, specifically from the perspective that a large part of many in this industry's plan is that we want blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies to become more of a "household concept" that's accessible to everyone.

But how do we do that?

We have to start with providing "entry points" that make sense to the average person on the street.

It's a lot easier to "sell" something like "because you can buy and sell your products with it" as a reason to get involved with cryptos than simply saying "because it's revolutionary new technology!"

Sure it is! But what do you DO with it?

Only leading edge visionaries and pioneers buy into concepts, the remainder of the world buys into functional applications they can use in their lives.

So that's what we need to bring them!

So Why Aren't YOU Doing This?

I almost wasn't going to add this last paragraph, but decided to at the last moment.

It's not me, because I am not a developer, and I have little technological know-how. I'm a sociologist, industrial psychologist, and a student of marketing and how humans use things.

In this particular context, I am an end user saying "I am seeing a need for a product/service that is currently unaddressed."

I'm not the one who's going to create and provide the service, I'm the one who's going to use it!

If I were, I'd be submitting something directly to a project like @utopian-io, but as a non-technical person, that is not an avenue for me... but if you are part of that organization, do please take this and run with it!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

If you feel this is a worthy topic for discussion, I hope you will consider being part of the dialogue, and perhaps re-steem this to your own follower base. Particularly if that follower base includes developers and people looking for opportunities. We have to start somewhere, and out of brainstorming dialogues we tend to see action and innovation.

nice article... i've been wondering why no one seems use SteemBay but for a few silver stackers and card traders. How have your rocks sales been?.. I enjoy your work!

I sold some old us currency using SteemBay back in december 2017 during the price spike.. got lucky

Yeah, people were a lot "looser" with spending their crypto, back then... plus, the @steembay guys were a little more actively involved in developing their process.

Usage does seem very limited, sadly. But I think it's important that we develop some sort of commercial system here as a further attraction to getting more people involved in the Steem ecosystem.

My stones sell fairly well through our brick-and-mortar gift shop, and when we go to street fairs and festivals and set up a booth. I have had limited success with eBay, Etsy and Amazon Handmade, still trying to grow those. Had a little bit of success using @steembay here with my "primary" Steemit account about a year ago... but that what when the price of cryptos was flying high.

Now I am trying to get this started, from the ground up... we'll see what happens! Even if all we end up with is some productive dialogue, it will still be worthwhile.

Hey I should point out @homesteaderscoop which is more or less a farmer's market on Steem :) Your handmade stones would find a good home there I think. https://homesteaderscoop.com/
EDIT - I should also mention that homesteaderscoop is powered by a WordPress plugin that @sagescrub developed which allows wordpress blogs to take steem/sbd as payment for goods :)

Thanks @carlgnash! Actually had a brief "comment conversation" with someone about that, a couple of weeks back, particularly relating to "homesteading" vs. "home GROWN" vs. "hand made art" and I was told that I basically had a green light there, so it's likely I will explore that as an additional outlet... particularly since my wife also creates "handmade goods" and we might use her "Ewenique Boutique" label to put all our creations together.

Thanks for the links; time to revisit this option!

This is a fabulous inquiry and observation regarding steem market opportunities. We had the same question - as I do have a tech background I was able to act on it. We have a lot of similar questions. You can find my own answer at https://homesteaderscoop.com. I am certainly curious to hear more about your and your wife's products. You can read more on what we are looking for in vendors at https://homesteaderscoop.com/sell - I look forward to hear your thoughts. I also sent you a message on discord and love to chat with you more about this post!

You can find our latest developments including bartering and gift economies in some of my recent posts at @homesteaderscoop.

Thank you @carlgnash for making this connection :)

I will definitely check it out @sagescrub! If there's a "match" with @homesteaderscoop, I'd definitely like to support that.

Glad you already hooked up.. saw your stones and thought of HSCO!

Yes, I hope more brave people open up their own little niche markets here on the blockchain. The more choices and bargains, the more sales, the more customers, the better the economy, and maybe even the steem value will go up.

Last week, I was trying unsuccessfully to buy something on Amazon. Found the item I wanted. It was in stock. There was no buy button. I was very confused, why I could only find links to start a 30-day free Amazon Prime.

After more research, I found out there is a lot of manipulation by Amazon on which customers get the best deals, and which sellers get to have their products available to be sold. It's a very unfair system governed by the corporation. Long story short, I found out the product I wanted was only available to be sold to Prime customers. Screw that! I found it for sale locally, and felt better for saving myself money on shipping and time waiting for delivery, and wasted interaction asking question to a bad customer service department.

Well, I'm certainly going to attempt to carve out my little niche here... and perhaps use the additional "tool" that if you buy something with cryptos, it's actually cheaper than with fiat... thereby upping the incentive.

I don't much care for Amazon, precisely because they use various types of "entrapment" to build their sales. You experience is definitely not unique. As an occasional seller through Amazon handmade, I am also not that impressed... because I am not willing to offer "will ship it YESTERDAY, for FREE" options... I lose visibility. Sorry, if I'm expected to offer free overnight shipping, I might as well flush $20 bills down the toilet.

The other thing that troubles me with places like eBay is their "creeping" return policy. It used to be "a week," then "two weeks," then "a month," and now they are pushing for a "two month" return policy as "standard."

WTF? Why don't we just FORGET about selling things, and instead call it "rent a product for as long as you feel like it, for free, with free shipping!" instead?

I do love decentralization, but it's important to remember that there are natural reasons why things trend toward centralization. As we build decentralized systems, it's important to understand those reasons and make sure that proper handling of the different cases is inherent to the new designs.

Thanks to @paradigmprospect, this post was resteemed and highlighted in today's edition of The Daily Sneak.

Thank you for your efforts to create quality content!

Thanks for the support!

And I agree. There seems to occasionally be a certain overzealousness when it comes to decentralization; some people want to simply get rid of ALL "centralized" ideas... but I have my doubts that would offer a functional existence.

you wouldn't even need an auction bot or any coding if you just had a "group" name and just have "members" post the art with an asking price and see what happens.

Technically speaking true @dddonnna; the main challenge is that most folks seem to want there to be a "someone" who has already provided a template and structure for how to do things.
