Steemit Notifications - Get notifications when your favorite authors post to Steemit

You can easily set-up text, email, push notifications, and more for Steemit with the IFTTT platform.

As a consumer of content on Steemit, it pays both literally and figuratively to be one of the first few readers to discover and vote for high-quality content. The benefits of discovering high-quality content earlier than others include:

• Higher curation rewards by voting at the optimal time.
• Improve the visibility of your comments by being one of the first to reply to a post.
• Increase the likelihood of receiving author responses to your comments by commenting early.

Post notifications can keep you informed of the latest posts by authors you want to follow. The steemit.com website doesn’t currently provide this service. However, it can be easily set-up using the IFTTT platform and an RSS feed provided by Streemian. IFTTT allows you to quickly set-up custom notification applets that fit your needs. These include text messages (SMS), email, push notifications and many more.

The following example will show the procedure creating mobile push notifications for Steemit posts by @ned.

Step 1

Select the authors you want to follow and create the RSS feed URLs.

An RSS feed is required to trigger notifications. The format for the RSS feed URL is: https://streemian.com/rss/@[author].

In the URL [author] is replaced by the name of the author you want to follow. In this example, we will set-up notifications for when @ned creates a new post. Other RSS feed options can be viewed on the Streemian website. Using the above format, the URL is https://streemian.com/rss/@ned for Ned’s RSS feed. The URL can be tested in your browser and should display unformatted text that begins with a timestamp.

Create a new notification applet on IFTTT.

Creating a notification applet will require that you create an account on IFTTT if you do not already have one. To create a new applet click your username in the upper right corner, then select “New Applet” from the drop-down menu. You will arrive at the applet set-up page.

Set-up the RSS trigger for your new applet.

The IFTTT applets are set-up, as the name suggests, using the “If This Then That” format. The trigger or “This” will first need to be set by selecting “+this” and then the “RSS feed” icon. On the next screen, we will select the “New feed item” option and enter https://streemian.com/rss/@ned in the Feed URL field as shown below.

Set-up the action for your new applet.

There are many action options available to you. In this example, we will use push notifications which will require the IFTTT app installed on a mobile device. The action can be set by selecting “+that”, then clicking the “Notification” icon. On the next screen, you will select “Send a notification from the IFTTT app”, which should be the only option. Next, in the notification field enter the following text New post by @ned: {{EntryTitle}} and click save. IFTTT will replace {{EntryTitle}} with the title of Ned’s post for each notification.

Now you will receive push notifications on your mobile device when Ned creates a new post on Steemit. Repeat this process for each of your favorite authors. This will keep you informed of the latest posts without having to constantly check your feed for new content.
