Day / Night Cycle on Steemit
Day-time:
Post, comment, vote, free-for-all.
Night-time:
"Submit a Story" feature will be unavailable.
24-hours / phase:
Just imagine we're all in the same time zone. On Steemit-land, days and nights are longer. A total of 48 hours / cycle. During day, Steemians are known to be most industrious, submitting 1 to 4 posts per day. Sometimes way lesser.
Night is when "Submit a Story" will be unavailable, so they are encouraged to use this 24-hour phase to interact with others through votes and comments.
How to implement:
- Make it part of the UI/UX on Steemit.
-or- - Anyone can start making it part of Steemit's culture. Roleplay, only if you believe that such an arrangement (planned cycle of me-time and you-time) would play out better for the long-term.
Why do I propose this?
Just learning from the best open world games (and MMORPGs) out there. Day and night cycle offers a change in gameplay. It doesn't have to be termed Day / Night. It could be any type of "opposing" phase. 24-hours / day. 24-hours / night. Arbitrary numbers, but I think the time period is intuitive enough.
Feel free to make it an app feature.
It doesn't have to be implemented by Steemit Inc. It could be an app feature. Maybe we'll get a good portion of people to play by this rule.
That's interesting, I love ideas like this. I'm not sure I'd necessarily vote for the change, but really interesting to think about.
A tradeoff is that it would cut into the votes and comments that happen otherwise. People would to some extent learn to stagger their activity, rather than necessarily have a bigger appetite for it.
I think 'playing by the rule' would ultimately be what it comes down to. If it's an app feature, people would just go back to Steemit Inc when they want to post during those hours. So it would need to be like a general understanding that this isn't really expected and it's less likely to be rewarded.
And then new people can still post unwittingly and not be like "wtf is this sh#t??", it'd just be like awh noobie posting in the night, and they'd have to learn that they're making a faux pas.
It's definitely a terrible idea for the decentralization of activities :P But i just like typing up stuff like this and see what people think of it lol. Putting limits is definitely not such a good idea :)
Ya, I didn't want to be a Debbie Downer to your idea, but I was thinking the same thing regarding limits :p In general I'm never really a fan of limits, there will be some unintended consequence.
Like I said though, fun to think about.
It's a very interesting idea. I really like how you outlined your proposed solution, not like others who mention an idea without any planned action. It changes the paradigm by forcing interaction, which I 100% support. But, that's just me. I don't know how voluntaryists would feel about that.
I'm all for anything that promotes interaction, and if removing the ability to submit a story for a while will change people's attitude, then you have my vote. A few things that popped up in my head while reading the post:
Perhaps, it would be better to have a counter? Let's say for every submission, you need to post X comments and vote on Y number of posts before you can submit again. Some people might game that by just commenting "Nice!" or whatever lame comment and vote randomly on whatever post without viewing it.
Encouraging interaction is really an interesting topic that really deserves to be discussed.

When is day and night? We have members from all over the world here in every time zone.
Maybe Steemit HQ's time. For example, today's "daytime", tomorrow's "nighttime", day after tomorrow's "daytime" again. 24 hours / phase so members all around have ample and equal time :). 12 hours / phase on the other hand, disadvantageous for those living "on the other side" of the planet.

Now that you mention it, I think I've been doing something like this unconsciously. Maybe it's just my wacky work schedule, but during the day I do most of my reading, commenting, etc. Towards evening - after a day of chewing on topics - I'll do one (maybe, but rarely two) posts. After that I'll check for whatever activity pops up and play some Wartune in between. Seems to be working well so far.
I dig it. It would be super cool to see the interface alter in some way to indicate time, maybe invert colors after a steemit "night" creeps in. On another note - having a universal time for steemit would actually be really logistically useful for things like competition entry deadlines, coordinating posts etc...
Thinking bout it, definitely a bad idea to decentralize activities around steemit, if decentralization is the first guiding principle..

Perhaps rather than "day/night" individuals might adopt the Hebrew/Christian concept of sabbath... i.e., Six days of work (content creation) and One day of rest (enjoy everyone else's content exclusively...) Just a thought, reflecting on your interesting concept... ;)
Not a good idea. Game didn't say you must do quests day time and play less at night.

Just read bout that yesterday, something about measurement in beats - not sure if u grasped what they were trying to do!
I started using swatch time back when it started, I even had a swatch watch at one time back in the 90s. Your idea seems a perfect fit for it, since they are both the same time in every timezone.
