Chained Armbar Escapes: The Gary Tonon way

This Month in training we've been going over escapes from bad positions and I'd like to share something that I've had much success with.

Gary Tonon has an amazing series of escapes when he finds himself in juji-gatame, you will very seldom see him get tapped via armbar. He usually sets up his escape series by using the "hitchhiker":

If that doesn't work and tori (in this case Kron Gracie) adjusts and begins to set up the omoplata, Tonon then rolls out and the position is reset back to square one. From here if he still can't use the hitchhiker he will stand the position up where he will force tori to attempt the armbar from guard and use the typical defense from that position here:

If that fails Tonon will roll out and back into the spiderweb and begin the series again. Catch him if you can! With these movements Tonon controls the angle at which he is being attacked and remains relatively safe.
