Why Am I Still Here?

in #steemimpact5 years ago (edited)

I joined Steemit nearly two years ago, in March of 2018. I admit I haven't always been as active here as I would like. I do a lot of writing and have a lot of platforms to publish on, but I'm beginning to make Steemit a priority. Here's why.

Steemit Rewards

This is an obvious reason for most people. But I'm not referring to rewards in the sense of earning Steem to sell for Bitcoin or fiat currency.

The reward structure of Steemit was designed to create a platform where bad actors would be disincentivized and good content would be rewarded. This is the main value of Steemit as I see it and it's why I like to post here. Earning any kind of meaningful income from the Steemit reward structure is impossible for most participants.

On the other hand, it's fun to try and publish content that gets upvotes and increases your reputation. It's also great to be able to curate the content of others, helping to make the community a better place.

Here's a link to a post I wrote last year about Steemit & Dtube when I was PR & Marketing Manager at BlockGroup, a PR firm for startups in the blockchain industry: https://blockgroup.global/2019/06/16/steemit-dtube-social-networking-blogging-and-video-sharing-in-the-blockchain-era/

Censorship Resistance

This is the number one reason I'm still here and will continue to stay here. During the last couple of years, there has been a sweeping push for censorship across all the major social media platforms. Many great content creators have had their accounts suspended or banned.

On the flip side, some of those who have been banned elsewhere have joined the Steemit community for obvious reasons. There's no one here that can censor anyone else. It would require coordinated downvoting, which no one is willing to do because it's more rewarding to become a productive member of the community.

I'm grateful to be a part of something like this. Blockchain technology can be used to create better alternatives to centralized systems, as evidenced by the existence of the Steemit community.

(p.s. I wasn't able to upload images for some reason, as I got an upload error message)
