A Day to Remember: My Son's First Rugby International – Wales vs. Fiji

Taking my son to his very first international rugby match was something I’d been looking forward to for ages. The energy in the stadium, the roar of the fans, and the pride of seeing Wales take the field—all of it came to life that day as we watched Wales square off against Fiji. Though the final score didn’t tip in our favor, with Wales losing 19-21, the experience was just as thrilling as the scoreline suggested.

The day began with a special surprise for my son. He had the chance to meet some of the players before kickoff, an unforgettable moment that put stars in his eyes and gave him stories to tell his friends for weeks. His excitement was contagious.

As we settled into our seats, the fireworks and the grand build-up created an atmosphere that was impossible to match. Seeing the pride and excitement in his face made every moment worthwhile.

Wales had a solid first half, taking the lead and giving us hope for a victory. We cheered at every try, groaned at every missed chance, and held our breath as the clock ticked on. But, true to form, the Fijian flair eventually turned the tide. Their skillful play, quick runs, and undeniable passion on the field made them a worthy adversary. My son and I watched, both impressed and a little disappointed, as Fiji pulled ahead in those final moments, showing why they’re such a respected team.

Even as the game ended with Wales on the wrong side of the scoreboard, the thrill of sharing this experience with my son was unbeatable. From start to finish, it was a day filled with laughter, anticipation, and a few proud Welsh tears. That close, nail-biting match is one we’ll both remember, a day when the game of rugby became even more special to us both.
