ou’ve probably wondered how we can actually measure fever. The answer to this question takes us back to a man called Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a German physicist from the 18th century. His work laid the foundations for what we know today as the thermometer. But how has this important instrument evolved over time? Let’s go on a journey together through the history of the thermometer.

The thermometer as we know it today owes much of its development to the German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. Although researchers before him had similar ideas and knew that mercury expands with heat, it was Fahrenheit who made significant progress in 1714. He developed a thermometer with a scale on which he defined 96 degrees Fahrenheit as the body temperature of a healthy person. Although his thermometers were reliable, they had one drawback: they were unwieldy long, about 60 centimeters.

However, it was the English physician Thomas Clifford Allbutt who made a significant breakthrough in 1867 by shortening the thermometer length to 15 centimeters. These shortened thermometers were now suitable for everyday medical use and enabled doctors to obtain correct results within five minutes. Allbutt used the Celsius scale, which indicates a normal body temperature of 37.8 degrees. This scale is widely used today.

Due to the toxicity of mercury, other liquids are now filled into the glass bulb of thermometers, for example ethyl alcohol. This development has not only improved safety, but also increased the accuracy of the measurements.

The evolution of the thermometer is a fascinating example of how science and technology have come together over time to constantly improve an instrument that is crucial to medical diagnostics. From the first experiments of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit to the modern, precise thermometers we use today, the history of this instrument is a story of innovation and progress.
