The Archaic New Year Resolution
First of all happy new year to everyone from around the world!
New Year always comes with excitements, dreams and hope of things to come. It always makes us feel we have another chance to try new things. For some, it marks the beginning of greater things in their lives. For others, it is the opposite.
While joy is literally the other word we can use to express New Year, it is not always rosy after we are fully in the New Year.
Plans are major things that define the New Year. We all come into the New Year with aspirations, things we want to achieve and things we want to do away with.
This informs the idea of a resolution. By that, i mean people's to-do list and not to-do list.
This resolution seems to look beautiful on paper and in the sight of the person making it but in reality; things don't always work out as planned.
I am sure we are familiar with the saying 'God's plan is the best'. It suggests to us that while we have our own plans, the one of God is the best. While this 'best' from God might not be what we wanted or even wished for, it still happens anyways.
This is sometimes called fate or fatalism as the case may be. While my philosophy might not permit to accept this view, it appears i have nothing to do to change that 'fact'.
Now if this view is true, since we all agree that things don't always work out as planned; since death, sickness or unforeseen circumstances might negate our positive intentions, why do we still keep forming resolutions?
It looks to me like we keep being the 'man' that we are called. By that, i mean the fallibility aspect of man. It is like writing something in the assurance that we have power over life whereas we don't.
While people who did this last year might not live to see this New Year, it’s also possible that many failed to keep these resolutions for a month.
Experience has shown that many don't keep New Year resolution. The question now is why do people make it? Why do we keep retaining this tradition that never really succeeded in achieving anything?
Personally, i don't keep such resolution and would like to know what you think about those who do. If you do, have you been able to keep one before?
