The goddess Athena helped the Achaeans by sending two huge snakes to kill the prophet Laocoon and his sons on the seashore.
She killed them when they came to bring gifts to Poseidon, the god of the sea.
When Poseidon learned of this, he was furious.
“No one can kill the priests who bring me gifts!” - The god of the sea exclaimed and immediately summoned his son Triton to him
“Tell me, Triton, how dare these creatures kill the priests?” - He asked
“They were sent by Athena to prevent Laocoon from warning the Trojans of the threat lurking in the dastardly gift of a wooden horse - Answered Triton, with his head down - She hid the serpents behind her bronze shield until the last moment.”
Poseidon thrust his trident into the sea rock and a whole pack of Telchinus, sons of Tartarus and Nemesis, immediately swam out to him.
“Oh, volcanic deities of the deep sea! - Poseidon exclaimed. - 'I command you to immediately purge all the seas and oceans of the poisonous and vile servants of the goddess Athena! You, sons of the goddess of retribution, Nemesis, know how to do this in a way that would make any Olympian god shudder before sending monsters to slay the priests who bring gifts to me, the chief sea god. I bless you!”
The Telchin rushed immediately to do the will of their god.
The very next day the entire ocean was cleansed of sea creatures.
And the serpents that had killed Laocoon and his sons were beheaded, turned to stone and displayed on a hill opposite the temple of Athena.
The elder Telchinus forged a shield similar to the one behind which Athena hid the serpents.
Then he put the severed heads of the creepers into the shield and threw it at Athena's feet.
'You managed to fool the Trojans by killing the priest.' - Said he. - But deception is a double-edged blade. Do not enter the elements of my god Poseidon again. Otherwise the blade of deception can harm even a powerful goddess like you.”
Athena wanted to haughtily answer Poseidon's envoy, but seeing the petrified snakes in front of her temple she lowered her head and prudently kept silent...
