Yes. SMTs are supposed to have extra functionality and flexibility, but they are long promised and won’t be delivered for ages.
The Steem Engine tokens have the basic functionality @jpbliberty needed. They are true Crypto tokens not just points as they are locked into the Steem blockchain.
I suspect most other DApps don’t need the extra bells and whistles of SMT’s either.
