Steem Developers Weekly Roundup - Week 5, January 2018

in #steemdev7 years ago (edited)

Hello Guys, it's your favorite Steem Developer, Christian Jombo. Starting from today, every week, I'm going to be sharing a weekly digest of what happened in the past week within the Steem Developer Community and probably what to expect in the coming week.

Alright then, let's jump right into it.

SteemConnect v1 is depreciated

Perhaps, one of the biggest news from last week is the beginning of the end of SteemConnect Version 1. @fabien announced this 9 days ago (Jan 20, 2018). But it was not until yesterday, Jan 27, 2018 that SteemConnect v1 located at https://steemconnect.com was moved to the subdomain https://v1.steemconnect.com pending retirement on February 20, 2018. This will come as a big blow to lots of developers who consider v1 easy to implement than it's new brother, v2. We all hope to say our tributes when v1 is finally laid to rest. For now, all we can do is to follow it's casket as it heads to the grave.

Slowdown on SteemConnect 2 API

Yeah, I know, right? We just talked about retiring SteemConnect v1 and v2 is acting up? Just 3 days ago, SteemConnect v2 API was unresponsive. This had a ripple effect as major services like @utopian-io and @busy were affected. I was working on @steem-fuse and discovered that the app became unresponsive. I discovered that the v2 API was down. It sounded impossible. I had to mail some developers to confirm it. Shortly after that, @busy confirmed it.

Whatever was the case, normal service has been restored as the @busy team made some changes to speed up the API and we can now rest easy. Information about this is here - https://steemit.com/steemconnect/@busy.org/slowdown-on-steemconnect-2-api

Build a P2P Steem/USD Gateway with Jerrybanfield

If there is anyone we call the darling of the steem community outside @ned, is @jerrybanfield. The man is a powerhouse, tirelessly working to push the community further and last week he dropped the sort of announcement that should get devs excited. 2 days ago he announced his intention to hire one developer to build a decentralized peer-to-peer exchange that we will use on Steem to directly buy and sell US dollars and other fiat currencies directly with Steem on this exchange.

Whoever builds this successfully will enjoy a lot of rewards including a paycheck every month of 1,000 Steem or $10,000 USD worth of Steem (whichever is less) from @budgets account as long as continuing improvements are made to the application.
Hmmm, $10,000 USD! Whoever said making money is hard obviously haven't met a developer --winks--
