However, a federal program that sent out free COVID tests started to run out of money at the beginning of September.
The now-defunct White House program, which was launched in January 2022, used the US Postal Service to distribute millions of free COVID-19 tests at home.16 free COVID tests were eventually available to all American households.
"Ordering through the free at-home test program was suspended on Friday, September 2 because Congress hasn't provided additional funding to replenish the nation's stockpile of tests," reads the banner on the government's website for free tests, CovidTests.gov.
