UI Proposal: Change "Upvote" to "Upsteem"

in #steemcity7 years ago (edited)

It may look like a small addition, but I think it's important. Here's why:

  • "upsteem" is closer to the name of the site, it's not voteit.com, it's steemit.com
  • "upsteem" will make it easier for people to understand what's happening when they are clicking that arrow - it's not like they're electing the content in some electoral college, but they are driving away steem from the rewards pool
  • since voting is such a common activity, changing the name to be closer to the site name will help with brand awareness
  • it will make the site stand apart from other sites which are using appreciation input and create an identity (just like "Like" is almost a Facebook patent)
  • it will give people a nice, personal touch: the self-esteem goes up

Was my first guess too, but try to use it in a sentence.
"Did you upsteem this" sounds much better than
"Did you steemup / steemuped this"

Just steemup'd your suggestion ;)

Haha. .Thanks a lot @gigafart .. you know what GyaniBilli means? Wise Cat :)

Steemup doesn't sound so bad, but upsteem is what I'd prefer personally.

Upsteem is closer to the idea. I vouch for that. It will be upsteem and resteem. So it be simple to understand.

I was thinking the button should be labeled simply "Steemit." But then I realized how awkward it would sound if everyone was going around saying, "Hey, I Steemited your post." "Upsteemed" sounds better.

Additionally, Steemit is only one front end of many. How should you call it when you use busy.org or eSteem? ; )

Good point. I guess they'll probably call it something different on each site / app.

Interesting proposal :)

I like that! branding!

I was also thinking the other day after making my feature proposal, that instead of "blog" the word "streem" as a combination of own posts and resteems would make sense.

streem sounds good too, I like it.

Sounds great, "upsteem" makes more sense since it is the act of giving the post steem so we "upsteem" the post. If we upvote, this does not indicate that the post is being paid. Good for branding also.

Disagree. One person who arrives for the first time to Steemit doesn't need any explanation about what "upvote" is.

"Upsteem" could be understood as "if I click here then STEEM price will go up", which is not the case.

"Don't put your baby in a microwave."
I'm against adjusting everything to the weakest part in the chain. So, a bit of thought should be expected from every user. And I think upsteem is quite self-explaining indeed. Users deal with STEEM here, so if you want to give some credits to the author naturally you would up the steem.

I also disagree about this potential (mis)understanding. The action is in the context of the article, not of the market. So it's pretty clear that when you click that button labelled "Upsteem", the steem associated with that post will go up.

I have to agree with javirid here. Steem/Steemit has such a huge learning curve already - there's not much here that's simple pick up and play and there are a large number of things that can be improved (don't get me wrong - I think this is fantastic!) for easier onboarding.

People understand "upvote" from the outset - I see the value of what you're saying from a branding perspective but when I put my 'new user' hat on, it's another thing I'd need to learn and another "Steem"-related term added into the headspace.

sounds good.

I do not understand your point exactly

right now the word used in the labels for voting a post is "upvote". I proposed to use "upsteem".

Ohhh, now i dig. think it will be cool

I like it!

Good suggestion bud! What will the "votes" at the bottom of the post be called then? "Upsteems"?
Cheers!
