By rising from the dead to return to eternal power at the right hand of the Father, Jesus fulfilled a vital part of God's plan that is of fundamental importance in the life and future of all mankind. If he had not risen from the dead, then the Christian faith would have no validity, since Jesus himself declared that he would rise from the dead on the third day. On the other hand, if Jesus rose from the dead, then all his affirmations are true and now we can be sure that there is life after death.

The Roman soldiers jealously guarded the tomb where the body of Jesus was. In addition, the entrance to the tomb was sealed with a huge rock. The Roman guard, which usually consisted of 16 members, would have made it impossible for the disciples who, by the way, were cowed by the fear of losing their own lives - stealing the body. After having been beaten and flagellated, hung on a cross for six hours, pierced with a spear by his executioners to ensure his death, and wrapped, as usual, in 100 pounds of linen and spices, Jesus had not been in any condition to roll a rock of two tons uphill, nor be more agile than 16 Roman soldiers and then radiantly appear to his disciples.

The Jewish leaders of the time could easily have refuted all the assertions about the resurrection simply by replenishing the body, but they could not because there was no body.

After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared at least ten times to those who knew him and to more than 500 people at the same time. These appearances were not hallucinations; Jesus ate and talked with his followers and they touched his resurrected body.

The Christian Church was born in the same city where Jesus was publicly executed and buried. The belief in a resurrected Jesus must have been authentic to have taken root in Jerusalem and grown to encompass the entire world. The Christian Church is now the largest institution that exists and has existed in the history of mankind. Clearly, this would have been impossible if the resurrection were only a story.

They abandoned and denied Jesus before his public trial; after their death they were discouraged and fearful. Yet, after their resurrection and their experience on Pentecost, these same discouraged men and women were transformed by the supernatural power of the risen Christ. In their name, they turned the world upside down. Many lost their lives because of their faith, others were terribly persecuted. His courageous behavior has no meaning apart from his conviction that Jesus Christ was truly resurrected from the dead - a worthy deed by which to die.
