Humble our Hearts Lord: We are lost without You | Luke 5:31-32

in #steemchurch5 years ago (edited)

This weekend I met with a friend whose child is being bullied in Sunday school, sadly not by children...

It has been said that Christianity makes you good, or that Christian's are "good" people, this just might be one of the Devil's greatest lies. How perverse and proud a declaration. We are not good, only He is good.

Romans 3:23 English Standard Version (ESV)

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 5:6-8 English Standard Version (ESV)

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

It is true, God so loved the world, that He gave His own son, but that we are loved is not testimony of our beauty, only of His generosity, grace and mercy.

We are not good. We are not beautiful. We are wretched, and worthless, BUT for Him. The extent to which we have ANY redemption, is in exact proportion to His presence in us. We are sacred only in that He breathed life into us, stitching us together in our mother's womb, not by our power or plans but because of His life in us.

Isaiah 45:9 English Standard Version (ESV)

9 “Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,
a pot among earthen pots!
Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
or ‘Your work has no handles’?

He does with us as He pleases and we ought to gratefully celebrate every step we are blessed to walk with Him, regardless of which path He chooses for us.

Romans 9:21 English Standard Version (ESV)

21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?

We are not good. We desecrate His church when we speak of our worthiness, and of our own works. We are broken jars. We are dead men's bones. However, and fortunately, He is life itself, and all power, goodness and wisdom, and in His love He breathes life into us, building something beautiful out of our brokenness, painting something lovely out of the ash heap of our lives.

We are not good, and the church is not a clean place where good "Christians" live. We are broken men and women, we judge others, and place heavy burdens upon one another, condemning the failures around us while denying those within us.

We are the ones who make a child unwelcome in Sunday school, or a man unwelcome in the pews, not God.

This is why it is said, a church is not a country-club, it is a hospital. We are not doctors we are the dead and dying. There is only one healer, only one Saviour, and His name is Jesus Christ.

Luke 5:31-32 English Standard Version (ESV)

31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Thoughts & Prayers:

May the atheist reading these words hear the truth: we are not good, but He is.

May the believer among us hear these words: remove the log from your own eye first.

Lord help us see our own failures, help us look inward and refrain from blaming others. We are not good, only you are good. We are dead without you Lord, help us stand rightly in this truth. Lord help us welcome all comers and admit humbly, we, Your church are not good, but yet we are loved, because although we are wretched You, being love, wisdom and power, made a way so that we might be reconciled to your beauty and life. Help us to stand in gratitude of your mercy, remembering that those who need You come, and those who need only themselves die.

None of us deserve Your love, but You give it nonetheless. Lord help us receive this blessing and be changed forever by the power of this love.

Lord help my brother and his little one, Your little one. Lift them out of judgement, by your power and authority and what difficulty they must endure, use it like a purifying fire and make them more Your own though the process. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

As always, thank you for your time and attention. Have an amazing day and God bless.
