It's just a matter of decision and "Regret".

The Lord Jesus Christ does not need to prepare himself, he is now willing and eager to receive us just as we are and in the way we are right now.

37 When they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brothers, what shall we do? 38 Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children and to all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call. 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and about three thousand souls were added that day.

Acts 2:37-41

Here we see a very interesting picture, the apostle Peter has preached to thousands of people and those thousands of people asked themselves the same question: what should we do? The answer has been practical, simple and direct: they should repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and what was the result? That same day more than 3000 people were added to the nascent church.

There is something that catches my attention when you read the text that instead of saying "Believe" it says "repent." We understand from the word of God that these two concepts are closely related and one depends on the other, repentance and faith are independent of each other and together they are exclusive to achieve salvation in Christ Jesus.

Salvation cannot be separated from faith since faith is what allows us to achieve salvation: I open quotes without faith it is impossible to please God", this faith leads us to repentance, both are linked and happen at the same time. To be saved we must place faith in Christ Jesus and this leads us to a change of mentality, to repentance, but many people believe that they must only change their way of living, their lifestyle before looking at Christ Jesus by faith.

Always remember this: Our Lord Jesus Christ is ready at all times to receive us in the situation and condition that we are, his masterpiece is to transform us as we mature in faith through the knowledge of him through his word, in God we will find strength to become who he wants us to be from the day he created us.
