One does not find that teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, which contains nothing about the action of the Holy Spirit. However, it does contain norms and practices of high ethical content that are not contrary to the Christian life; in fact, they express the nature of the mind of Christ, which should also be the mind, the way of thinking of Christians. For the Christian it would be helpful to study and learn the great principles formulated in this discourse, although he will never manage to take them to his experience by his own strength, but he must go to another source to seek power. What we have in this Sermon is a wonderful electric bulb; but we lack the generator that produces the power, the energy that makes it shine light.
The main purpose of the Sermon is to establish before human beings the law of the kingdom. In Matthew we are talking about the King who has come to present himself. John the Baptist was His forerunner and the King invited some disciples to follow him. Then he enunciated the law of the kingdom. This was the King's manifesto and the Prince of Peace's declaration of principles. And it was a law. It would be the law of a world where Christ reigned, that would reach his fullest joy and complacency. Christ will reign on earth and will enforce every word of this law. The Sermon on the Mount will finally triumph, when He who has the right to rule comes. Now it is inconceivable to me that anyone who recognizes him as Lord today despises this document or departs from it. The Christian who calls Jesus Christ will seek to do what He commands, although he can only obey him by the power of the Holy Spirit. It would be futile to try to force or impose the principles of the Sermon on the Mount in a rebellious and contradictory world. Only the Gospel of the grace of God can convert human beings into people obedient to Christ, for which it was proclaimed.
The Sermon on the Mount has to be preached to bring conviction to the hearts of men. This document allows human beings to know that they have sinned, revealing that no one is just and that everyone is far from the presence of God.
The Christian can take the principles formulated in the Sermon on the Mount and consider them in the light of other passages of the Scriptures. This will give you a broader vision and a better understanding of the mind of Christ. For example, only here can you find Christ's definition of murder and adultery. Christ quoted 2 of the commandments, which we find in Exodus 20:13 and 24, and elevated them to the highest level: "Thou shalt not kill" and "Thou shalt not commit adultery." These are the only 2 recorded in Matthew. But He could have elevated each commandment to a higher level of achievement. If from the Law of Moses it could be said, in Galatians 2:16: "... by the works of the law, no one will be justified." Then, it would be much harder to be justified by the Sermon on the Mount.
Many who piously claim that this Sermon is their religion, what they really mean is that they consider it a good speech, beautifully expressed, but that it does not influence their lives at all. This discourse inspired by the law, which models all its norms, should affect individual and community life. Its great principles and goals are very high. We need to know them well, although it is true that they reveal very realistically how far our insufficiency goes. If you approach this document with sincerity, you will be attracted to a Savior who died for you on a cross. God bless you.
